Part of my inspiration comes from ambient sounds and music from youtube, however, I'm having a bit of trouble finding something to help me set the environment for an apothecary. The setting is in a fantasy, mideval world, so this apothecary is run by a town cleric. Does anyone have any suggestions for audio? If you suggest songs, I prefer ones without lyrics. Much appretiated!
@Skelly Jack Check out these sites that are free. https://www.jukedeck.com/ The music is lyric free. Generated by robots, and downloadable. Make an account and you can have music generated up to 5 minutes long. http://freemusicarchive.org/ Is kinda like youtube but for musicians. Has a large library of all genres of music (including ambient), and you can download individual songs or entire albums if you visit the artists page. (I have spent hours going through their Metal and Electronic genres/subgenres. But you can find ambient music and lyric free music too, though you have to listen to the tracks in the search that pique your interest.) Hope this is helpful to you in your quest for ambience.
I do like their stuff, but I'm looking for something that isn't so dark. It's not a creepy, or unsettling environment. In fact, it's quite comforting.
Not perfect, most of that stuff is crap. Try the band that almost invented the modern genre of electronic "atmospheric" music, Tangerine Dream. Their music has been used in several big movies, including the fantasy classic... Legend.
Apothacary? Maybe smells too Bubbling flasks, ground fibers of plants turned to dust dancing in the air, etc Oh, you mean an audiobook... Well you can only do so much, then use your writing to really help them see it Unless you are a sound engineer yourself. Most audiobooks that use it just go into small soundbytes of crackling fire, whooshing smoke... he kind of stuff you might use in a play.
No, not an audio book, but that does sound fun. I simply use the sounds to "see the environment," if you will. I like to make my first draft all about the scenery, second about the characters, and third is for improving grammar and to fill in any plotholes that may be left. And maybe an additional to ensure they match the rest. So, when I'm writing a scene, I like to find a focal point of the scene, what would be most noticeable, describe it, and build around it. For instance, the apothecary would be a place where you hear bottles clinking and boiling sounds, but I can't seem to find anything like that. So, I'm hoping someone can help me find such, or even a different focal point in the area to build around.
