    Shape-shift

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Rei, Jul 14, 2009.

Is there any way that is more technically correct to refer to shapeshifting?

Shapeshift, shape shift, shape-shift. My spellchecker tells me it's wrong as one word, but I have seen it written that way.

I believe it's usually written together: shapeshift.

I've only seen it as shapeshift, but I think the word transform works better.

I've seen it written as a single word more often than not too.

Merriam Webster gives it with the joining hypen "shape-shift.er/ing". The Wikipedia article on the subject flits between it being one word and it being joined with the hyphen, but never as two unjoined words. I'd trust MW over Wikipedia any day, and more so than most, if not all, spell-checkers, which BTW MW offers only with the joining hyphen. "spelling checker" however is offered as seperate words.

Do keep in mind that spellcheckers tend to be stupid about this sort of thing.

Case in point, right now my spellchecker wants me to refer to it as a "spell checker."
