Weekly Poetry Contest (128) - Halloween

Discussion in 'Monthly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Nov 1, 2010.

    Poetry Contest
    One Hundred and Twenty Eight

Okay, this is a bit out of kilter, due to the extension on the last contest, but I'm sure you can all pretend that it's still Halloween, right?

    The Rules
    • All entries must be on the set theme.
    • Only one entry per member.
    • No editing of entries once posted without my express permission (i.e. PM me and ask).
    • Poems must be titled
    • Poems must be a minimum of seven lines in length
    • Entries must not have previously posted on the forums, and are not permitted to be posted for critique until AFTER the contest is completed.
    • Any violation of these rules will result in disqualification of entries, and possibly infraction.

The entry stage will last seven days, meaning it will close on Monday 8th November 2010.

The voting stage will begin immediately, and will be open for three days, ending on Thursday 11th November 2010.

And this week's theme is: Halloween

The next (129th) contest's theme will be taking us back to primary school with Acrostics, and it will be opened on 9th November 2010.

Be imaginative, have fun, and get writing.

PS: If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I don't bite (much).

    Only For Tonight

Like the Dutchman on an expanse of windless sea
The moon glowed with a ghostly flow, watching.
    Leaves crunching under excited feet,
Laughter, lyrically floating from costumes, far below.

Demons and angels, cats and dogs,
Friend and foe, running door to door.
Fantasy and fiction come to life tonight
    Only for tonight.

Time has stood still, for fear can not hold,
Time flows by too quickly on this night's fleeting joy.
Ghosts and gobblins cavort, where the living avoid,
For this is the night past and present are as one.

There are no strangers this night,
Only those who count the candy,
Only those who play the tricks,
    All Hallow's Eve,
    Only for tonight.

    The Conception

    All Hallows Eve
    Looms in the dark.
    Disguising our face
    Darkening our heart.
    The night drawing near
    Anticipation on the rise.
    Reliving childish fears
    Halloween and the cries
    Of the fallen
    Out for the haunt.
    The night is calling
    Dead faces gaunt.
    Where are they feeding
    On this night, evil breeding?

    The spirits of night

We haunt you in dark dreary places
Where nothing can hide from our sight
We scare you with our horrid faces
We are the spirits of night

You think you can hide in the shadows
We want you to think that you might
But darkness is where we would hide
We are the spirits of night

    Deadly chants we would sing
Making you all cringe in fright
Fear is what we would bring
We are the spirits of night

    Tonights for Fright

Through the silicone smoke and neon light,
the loves for the day, tonights for fright.

Outlined in black, a sillhoute swirl
    dirty blonde, halloween dream girl.

I reach to touch, but find only air
wherever you are, I wish I was there.

As their shadows creep, my eyes widen.
The door weeps, their hands reach.
Hums of light pierce the door.
    I don’t think I can take anymore.

My feet trembles, my heart paces
Screeches whines, as I inch forward
The floor creaks , and my ears seizes
My fingers cry, and I grab the knob

I open the door, and my mind screams
Trick or treat, is what I see
Happy Halloween is all I need.
