    DIRECTIONS (poetry competition)

First one way then the next
    Which direction should I take
Maybe I should send a text
Before I make a big mistake

I'll take the left, or perhaps the right
Will someone tell me what to do
    Pity there's no-one in sight
I simply am without a clue

And then I spy a wooden signpost
It seems to say I should go right
It says this way to reach the coast
But there's no coastal bus in sight.

If I now walk, I'll be too late
I know she'll never wait for me
    I'll never get another date
    With bonnie Betty Bradbury

    Bloodhound Bob

They say he sleeps in the crags and brush
A rifle rests at his boots
They say he creeps through the shadow of dusk
Woe to the beast he pursues
He could track a maggot through slums
Akin to a bloodhound he be
He could track a mole through the Earth
Or a minnow throughout the sea

A stranger in every sense of the word
Folks shudder when one utters his name
His wrath is not wise to incur
Though he has naught but a horse, a rifle, and fame
Or infamy, it may very well be
Depending on where a man stands
For Bloodhound Bob has hung corpses from trees
and spilled blood on the distant sands

His teeth rot and fall from his mouth
And his beard is entangled with louse
A plug of tobacco rests in his lip
And a straw hat covers his brow
    Beasts, varmints, killers and thieves
    Surrender your souls and repent
For a bottle of whiskey and some tobacco leaves
Bloodhound Bob will be on your scent

    We are but mortals,
    Just trying to avoid troubles.
    Entering all there portals,
    Until finally everything crumbles.

And we try to find our life's meaning,
We are all sick of such earthly desire.
But in our head we hear this ringing,
Gently speaking that desire is what we require.

And I know that this is our doom,
That it leads to unnecessary illusions.
Among dozens we seek that one room,
We all seek to end these pointless directions.

But deep inside we recognize this as a lie,
For these ideas are if nothing else soothing.
And we often think that if for an answer we seek to die,
We will finally unveil an image that has been looming.

    Two Uses of Direction

That thing I was supposed to do
    I diddly squatted upon until
It out of bounded (but first it grew)…
A comet! (No, rather, a daffodil.)

It t’warn’t nuthin’ but a speaking of
That arrowed towards a farther sky.
    It gyropiloted my love
And planted it amongst the wry.

There it boomed a little wilt
    While thirsting for description.
Alas, the bit of seed it spilt
    Was swallowed as prescription.

    The Direction I Went

I can go left to Tokyo, Japan,
Or I can stay right where I stand
I can go right to Paris, France
And meet him when I land

    Two hours to Miami, Florida
    And thirty six to NYC
It doesn’t matter where I go, I think
As long as it’s a place to be

Shall we go to the English Pub,
    Or the perhaps Sapphire Room?
When you say ‘Your place or mine?’
    Somehow it got misconstrued

    Choices make up eighty percent
Of our paths we take in affection
Because motions are just the undertone
In what we know as direction

    The Poles

    The compass hand
    it spins around
    The poles have switched
    from up to down

    Finding center
    was never so hard
    Directionless children
    learning who they are

    But one day you'll discover
    after all your wandering
    That no ones compass works
    it's all just absent pondering

    Holly came to an impasse
In land of hills and green
    The sign said Bell Air
    She paused
Which way should i dare to dream?
In all the movies i've seen
    The stars were bright
    But ergo
    A rancid smell of greed
    From Billionaires behiond it all
    To millionaires in scenes
Holly thought about all the evils
    The ostentatious flaunt of needs
    She looked at her boyfriend
    Long hair ripped jeans
    She was in love
    She was already free
She hailed a taxi and the driver said
"Which way would you like to leave?"

    Do Women Come With Directions?

He spots a little cutie down the street
She grinned real wide and looked so sweet
    His heart started to race
Until she sprayed him with mace
Then she kissed him and yelled, “Trick or Treat”

    Final Direction

    I glide through life,
with everyone acting like it's so easy to be alive.

My face is a vacant mirror.
Reflecting back the emotions people express so eager.

Alone is the word to describe me,
    Nobody to stand beside me.

I always was afraid of heights,
but now the only direction I want to go tonight.

    Is down.
