A noble pursuit it is not
Chasing all girls cos they're hot.
    Better to stick
    Just to one chick
And not try to be the big-shot.

A noble pursuit it is not
Not getting to work on the dot.
    If you turn up late
    It's left to your mate
To do all the work you forgot.

A noble pursuit it is not
If one day you win the jackpot
    Then keep it all
    Give nought at all
To people who have not a lot.

A noble pursuit it is not
    Acting like your a hot-shot
    Flashing the cash
    Then making a dash
    For the biggest, showiest yacht

A noble pursuit it is not.
Killing wild deer with a shot
    If they do not run
    And you shoot your gun
    Escape they simply cannot.

A noble pursuit it is not
Stealing cars from a parking lot
    While others do make
    You're just out to take
    What a loathsome cowardly plot

A noble pursuit it is not
Writing poems with words that are 'grot'
    I try very hard
    But I'm not The Bard!
I regret this is all that I've got.

    I found a noble pursuit
    and called it the truth

I knelt at the feet of the virgin
of Guadalupe and begged for miracles
crying silent tears, exulting silent thanks
I lit candles and mumbled prayers

    oh beautiful, divine lady
your cloak is the blue sky
your adornments are the golden stars
your dress is woven with scarlet flowers
    your vessel is the moon
and at your feet are the angels

    on Mount Tepeyac
you appeared to the peasant and promised
    to show compassion to all
who loving and trusting in you
    ask you for mercy

gracious lady, i come to you
with a pure and simple heart
    i bring you rose petals
    oranges and fresh gardenias
    I lay at your alter

    sweet Mary, glancing
down at me with radiant eyes
the secrets of a million universes on your lips
the songs of the skies of birds in your ears
the rays of infinite suns on your skin

    beloved queen of the heavens
    mystical worker of miracles
    you who vanquished the serpent
and carried the unborn God in your womb
surely you can hear my prayers

    blessed mother, grant my favors
heal my sorrows, pardon my sins
and protect me from all evil
and when my time on this dirt is done
sweep me up in your infinite mantel
and carry me above the clouds
    up into your celestial kingdom

    The Most Noble Pursuit

~ The words start to mesh together, losing any distinguishing features.

"Let me tell you what he said...
    Did she really do that...
    Do you like the movie...
    I love her new hat..."

    ~ There's more.

    "What he should have said...
    What she should have done...
    What I would have said...
    If I were the one..."

    ~ Groan.

"Well if it were me, I'd..."

"Who do you think will win...
    If I was the coach..."

    ~ It's all the same.

    "... if he said ... ... when I was there I'd ...
    ... they should have ...
    ... ... ... I'd ... ...
    You should...
    ...he ought to..."

    ~ Over and over again,
    this eternal refinement,
    of themselves and each other.

~ Do the habits with which we interpret,
    and react to all things,
    whether trivial,
    or even real,
    merit such obsession?

"It is the most noble pursuit."

~ The cheerful man is speaking to me.
Before I complain he assaults me again,

"These collections of habits you've noted,
    are called personalities,
and the fools always name them 'Me'."

~ Once more he interrupts before I can start,

"Their compulsive tinkering with them isn't to be derided,
but applauded as an overpowering drive for self-improvement,
    they've just misidentified the self."

~ And for the first time in an age,

    There is hope.

Following the footprints in the sand...

Black imprinted upon the blistering white.
    Words, concrete and solid,
    Struggling to define an idea.
An idea that is a thousand shades of grey.

An idea with no single answer...
    Noble pursuit...

Some may provide the simple definition of the words,
The merest basis of the ideal.
    Others will list examples,
Their embodiments of the ideals, coloring the grey...

Situations that try the soul, break the heart.
    But is it noble pursuit...?

Is it something as simple as truth, however bitter it might be?
Is it a line of footprints in the snow, striking out alone,
Or maybe the perfect, joyous laugh of a child?
A hand reaching to catch hold...

Simple or complex, dark or bright.
Which is wrong, which is right?

Mortal born and dreamer's flights, a hero's journey...
    Songs, poems, and stories told.
Physical embodiments, the words upon a page.
The moral of a fable, the glory of a legend.

This Noble Pursuit we seek to define...
Stark in its ability as old as time.

Broken down unto a single, speaking word that carries us through the dark...
