Weekly Poetry Contest (216) - The Inevitable

Discussion in 'Monthly Poetry Contest Archives' started by Banzai, Nov 27, 2012.

    Poetry Contest
    Two Hundred and Sixteen

Sometimes I think about how long these contests have been running, and I feel pretty damn impressed.

    The Rules
    • All entries must be on the set theme.
    • Only one entry per member.
    • No editing of entries once posted without my express permission (i.e. PM me and ask).
    • Poems must be titled
    • Entries must not have previously posted on the forums, and are not permitted to be posted for critique until AFTER the contest is completed.
    • Any violation of these rules will result in disqualification of entries, and possibly infraction.

The entry stage will be open for seven days, closing on Monday 3rd December 2012.

The voting stage will begin immediately, and will be open for three days, ending on Thursday 6th December 2012.

And this week's theme is: (courtesy of LX_Theo) The Inevitable

The next (217th) contest's theme will be (courtesy of Timewalker): Writing a Poem, and it will be opened on Monday 3rd December 2012.

Be imaginative, have fun, and get writing.

PS: If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I don't bite (much).

    The Inevitable Is Inevitable

    People do say,
    They do say,
    That the inevitable is inevitable.

    Life to probe,
To refute, life we should probe,
    That the inevitable is inevitable.

    It was said.
    Something wrong was said.
    That the inevitable is inevitable.

    Not a clap,
It should recieve not a clap,
    That the inevitable is inevitable.

    You can change,
    The fact you can change,
    That the inevitable is inevitable.

    A Sticky Inevitability

    Protect it for years,
Always told no, always told yes.
    Boys all want it,
Girls want it to be special.

It rarely is, that first fumbling time.
Tears usually follow, maybe some fear.
    Am I a woman?
    Am I a man?

You're simply a little less naive.
    Push your chest out.
    Brag to all your friends.
    You still don't know shit.

Check it off your teenage bucket list,
    Another of life's little inevitabilities;

Someday, you'll wish you had hung on a bit longer.

    Nonentity: A Voice

    Nonentity: A Voice

    The blow lands.
    Hard and heavy.
    A fragile form crumples.
    Tears fall.
    Silence is born.

Blood and ash sear her senses.
    Eyes, haunted and dark...
    Lift from the begrimed hands.
    Clenched in fists...
Streaks of pale skin glimmer through the soot.
    The silence grows...
    A massive bruise spreads.

    Reserves are gone.
    Nothing is left.
This is the point of no return.
    A determined glow flashes.
    A slender chin tilts.
A dark tendril of hair whips out.
    A deep breath is drawn.

    Defiance or defeat.
She has never tried this road before.
    Bruised and bleeding she rises.
    Climbs to her feet.
Eyes burning with an inner strength.
A power that is strongest in the darkest times.
    Blind hope.

    She takes a step back..
A manacled hand locks about her arm.
She twists away, pushes through the pain.
    Another step.
    The silence screams...
    Never has she spoken.
Never has she tried so hard.
    To break free...

    Still another step.
    Again a hand snakes out.
    Seizing her shoulder.
    Spinning her about.
    Her chin goes higher.
Her dark gaze spitting sparks of rage.
    She wrenches away.
    Numb to the pain.

    Facing her torment...
    She takes one more step.
    The silence dies...
    Shredded by a Voice.
    The Voice of the Nonentity...

    "Stop this..." she screams.
"I am not a nameless, faceless nothing."
    "I am a Voice..."
    "I cry, I speak, I see, I hear, I feel."
    "Listen to this voice."
"See with your blind, foolish eyes."
"Let your own heart learn to feel."

The hand raised to strike her drops.
    Never has she spoken.
    Always she was a nonentity.
    A shadow, a wrath...
    No one saw or heard.
Was she that lone cry in the dark?
    Was she the lonely laugh?
    What made her keep on?
    What made her wonder?

    The torment stepped back.
The Nonentity now possessed a face.
    A heart, a soul.
    A voice.
She was no longer a nonentity.
    She was an individual.
    She was free...
    She was leaving.
    The torment did nothing.
    Just let her go.

    An inevitability...
    She...this Defiance.

You thought that life is fair,
    that pain is for others.
That you could spend the rest of your days
    watching people in their heartache.
    The complex darkness of humanity
was there for you to write,
    arrange, steal.
You imagined yourself hidden in the half shadows,
watching a movie that never touched you.

    The pain startled you
as you realized the darkness behind you called your name.
As you turned your back on the life of others,
with spread out arms you were stumbling in the vast mystery
    that suddenly engulfed you.
That’s when the words you read so many years ago
    echoed in your mind
like your footsteps in the emptiness around you:
    defeat is inevitable.

At the distance voices, the voices of others, hint the way.
    The way out of loneliness
    and into the light.
