    What do you call somebody who thinks they know everything?

    Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by MatrixGravity, Apr 9, 2011.

    Somebody who thinks they know better then you, somebody who feels the need to always have the last say and win the argument. Whats the correct term for a person like this?

    Egotistical or something?

    Dogma is a doctrine or belief, Dogmatist is someone who teaches that doctrine or belief - usually applies to someone who believes their beliefs are right and lays them down expecting everyone else to follow them.

    OP didn't ask who DOES know everything... the question was what do you call someone who thinks they know everything. Your answer is invalid ;)

    Hi MG

    Being serious;

    There is a phrase 'Egotistical something or other' I just can't remember what it is.

    I take it that you want to know the answer to this Q for your writing.

    Being that I can't answer your Q - it might be of benefit to look at, what type of person does this;

    One person in particular that I know, has very low self-esteem. It is as if she as always to prove a point - that point being 'look at me. I'm not stupid'. The thing is to whom is she trying to prove this point - to her audience or to her self -I would say the latter.

    I suspect a person that does this lacks confidence and has possibly, in the past been bullied - put down - didn't do well at school or maybe can't get out from under the shadow of a bright and successful sibling. I would think that they are certainly not comfortable in their own skin.

    I gave you several words that could mean what you asked.

    Pedant, Dogmatist, Bluestocking (applies to educated women only), Sophist - they all mean know it all you were the one that picked them apart. Now if you had gone and taken them and looked them up in a dictionary you may have found the one you wanted or a thesaurus would give you a different more appropriate word. Pedagogue may also work depending on the context or braggart.

    Egotist is more selfish and boastful.

    If you want less intelligent then there are phrases like know-it-all, smartie-pants, swat, teacher's-pet, scoob, egghead, wise-ass, windbag.

    I suspect the exact word you appear to want doesn't exist. Is is possible that you actually want?

    omniscient - the quality of knowing everything
    or
    polymath - a person who knows a lot about a lot

    Incidentally, learning isn't about being spoon-fed answers to questions. It is about doing the legwork yourself. Moreover had you thought about it, you might have learned a great deal from the responses you've received thus far: when a bunch of intelligent people have not ( often, here, by their own admission) been able to quite find the exact thing required it might be reasonably concluded that that exact thing doesn't exist...or that if it does, it's so obscure as to be (surely) unsuitable for your purposes.

    What he is saying is the moment you dismissed know-it-all, arrogant git etc you were looking for a word that is not everyday.

    The very fact a writer's forum was goofing instead of giving you terms told you you were looking for something obscure.

    Also you could have taken the intial know-it-all and done some legwork by putting it into an online thesaurus, then taking the terms from he thesaurus and plugging them into an online dictionary. Pedant is most likely the word you want.

    Contemptuous, disdainful, insolent (kind of, depending on the situation), lordly, overbearing, egotistic, presumtuous, arrogant, pretentious... ?

    I would just use know-it-all. Or, if I really wanted to make a point I'd use them all in one long hateful sentence.
