    Formatting question - Ship names

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by doggiedude, Jun 3, 2016.

I found out recently that I'm supposed to be using italics when using the name of a ship. I'm wondering how far this convention extends.
My WIP has several habitats in space that I'm assuming would also need to be italicized.
In addition to this, they are building Arks to store people in space. The Arks are named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc. Usually, when I refer to them it's by saying, Alpha Ark or Beta Ark.
    So which would be correct?
    Alpha Ark
    Alpha ark
    Alpha Ark
    Alpha ark

On the basis that HMS Ark Royal has both names capitalized, I'd use:

    Alpha Ark

How about a space station? Does the word station need to be included in the italics?

    Tsukino station
    Tsukino Station
    Tsukino Station

I'd have to say Tsukino Station is correct because the word 'station,' in this case, is capitalized and would have to be for clarity.

Another example: Grand Central Station (although it's hard to find examples of this on the Internet because: laziness)

It's a man-made structure so, like a ship, all the words designating exactly what it is are all part of the name and so would be italicized.

    Other examples:
U.S.S. Enterprise (United States Ship Enterprise)
H.M.S. Pinafore (Her Majesty's Ship Pinafore)
H.M.C.S. Cornwallis (Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Cornwallis) which is an anomaly because it's actually a stone frigate.

If your station were to be named in kind, it might be U.F.S. Tsukino (United Federation Station Tsukino).

    Thanks.
I thought it seemed strange to use italics for Ark but not Station.

I never knew this, I have several pictures of ships from the battle of Waterloo in my book, I might have to go back and re-write their names lol
    Thanks for the help x
