I am studying pagan religions and I want to know which is the largest. This is the wikipedia page, go nuts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paganism#:~:text=Modern%20paganism%2C%20or%20Neopaganism%2C%20includes,Neo%2DDruidism%2C%20and%20Discordianism.
The largest modern pagan (also known as neo-pagan) religious movement is Wicca, followed by Neodruidism. Both of these religions or spiritual paths were introduced during the 1950s and 1960s from Great Britain. Germanic Neopaganism (also known as Heathenry) and Kemetism appeared in the US in the early 1970s. https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+the+largest+pagan+religion&oq=what+is+the+largest+pagan+religion&aqs=chrome..69i57.14423j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
By Pagan do you just mean pre Judeo-Christian, Or is there a more specific definition? As I understand it, the so-called first religion was Animism, the belief that every natural object had a soul and you could talk to it, ask permission to hunt it or drink water from it etc. That was basically the worldwide religion in the Paleolithic age as I understand it. Or the Neolithic? Ok, take what I say as vaguely-remembered things I read somewhere once, and no more than a basis for further research. Also, it's fun reading this thread, like getting updates on a sporting event. I'll check in in a bit to see who's winning.
Or are you only looking at still-existing pagan religions? I don't think there are many Animists left. Maybe some indigenous peoples, like Aborigines. I think Animists are the ones that have Shamans, but again, check before quoting me. It's been a while since I read up on it, and that info isn't holding up well for memory retention.
If one goes by the dictionary definition of paganism as a polytheistic religion, I suspect Hinduism wins. Shinto has 100 million followers (almost all Japanese) and is the world's fifth largest religion (apparently).
Can somebody read this for me? https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/212081482.pdf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greco-Roman_mysteries https://powerlisting.fandom.com/wiki/Greco-Roman_Mysticism
