I'm about three weeks away from sending off my young adult science-fiction novel. There isn't enough science-fiction on the shelves these days, so I'm attempting to bring it back in a big way. The difficult thing about writing sci-fi is that technology is quite good these days, so it takes more to impress people, especially teenagers. But hopefully I've done all right.
Fantasy, though I'd love yo dabble in other genres at some point. I'm discovering my forte really lies in romance and drama, but I'm not sure I wanna write something set only in the real world - I've not really done that very much in my life. It's just always been fantasy.
If it's drama, like, family drama, or anything romantic in a dramatic sense (suicidal lovers, or a divorce, for instance), I'd put it in general fiction. If its romantic, like, the whole point of this story is to enjoy a love affair, then put it in romance.
My and KaTrian's current WIP is sci-fi. Once we've finished the current (approx.1000th) draft, we'll return to an old fantasy piece.
I wager she'll cast her own vote, being a bored office drone, i.e. a WF regular. I do commend you on your choice of thesiseseses. ETA: I neither cringe nor weep, but I do rue and lament.
Finishing up the first draft to the third novel in my fantasy series. If my publisher likes it, hopefully it'll be released by late spring.
Mine is a futuristic-polictical-humor-anti-romance-pseudoerotic-dramatic-somewhat fantasy. Kinda hard to know what button to click.
Renegades (appalling working title) is an action-drama, with elements of sci-fi, while my as-yet-unnamed book about Somerled is historical fiction.
I know a lot of people write in those genres, of course, but when you have writing forums like Mythic Scribes dedicated to fantasy, and others dedicated to Science Fiction, I thought there would be a more even distribution, if not a majority, in the general fiction genre. Not that it matters; just found it interesting.
I actually write in a range of genres; it's just the OP wanted the most important one. If I included everything (novels only), then it would be: science-fiction, fantasy, drama, and crime/thriller.
I wanted to make this as unbiased as possible. We could argue all day and night about what we like to write and don't like to write, so I thought I'd make it easy and narrow it down to what we're physically doing right now, and only the most important work. I'm not surprised by the current results. I anticipated this, considering that a majority of the threads in the character, setting, and plot sections pertain to fantasy and science fiction. To all those who voted sci fi or fantasy, congratulations, you're all rivals
That's fair enough - I was just pointing out to Steerpike that this poll is showing only what we're currently working on/is most important. I'm not surprised either, to be honest. And thanks for the rivalry boost, there, 123!
I also write a variety. Science fiction, fantasy, horror, general fiction, thriller. I have an idea for a Western as well. Right now, the main one is a fantasy.
