I'm usually inspired by TV, movies and sometimes even other books. UTK was, obviously, based on cooking competition shows like Top Chef and Hell's Kitchen From Blood to Roses was inspired by spy movies like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Red Disney's Aladdin was a jumping off point for my short story Kneadful Things I came up with the idea for Gravity while watching Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. Connor is a lot like Chris Powell in personality, though I made him much bigger physically
TNT: Discovery and documentary shows. Movies to confirm my anti-apocalypse perspective. TC: Recurring nightmare, that prompted an opposition story.
Finding out different ways that people think and feel. That starts to build a base to certain kind of motivation. Motivation + all that start to build a character and his/her story.
Certain ideas.. My life is filled with misery and existential dread. I think about certain specific ideas and concepts involving 'worst case scenarios' of every action I take. Also, ironically, chapters in The Bible inspire me to write. It's like using characters and stories to convey a unique idea.
I have been a voracious reader all my life, and that's what inspired me to try doing it myself. Nothing more wonderful than a book!
Interesting about how life impacts onhow one writes. About the Bilble do you have a chapter in mind? I am most interested to know if that is Ok?
Less, now that I'm writing, but they're now vivid reality on paper. The nightmare feelings are now suppressed with meds, but the story remains.
Myth, legend, folklore/fakelore and old arcane philosophies are the main stimuli for what I like to write. I'm starting to look into more contemporary source material like Wicca and earth mysteries too. Weaving it all in together. I'm gathering quite an oddball collection of books for dipping into.
Sure, Genesis and Judges have thought provoking chapters. I forget which part it's in but the Pharaoh's dream about the different unique animals is interesting because it tells about the past and represents the future at the same time. There's a lot more though. It introduces different concepts or cases that I wouldn't have thought about before.
Watching/reading too many god damn urban fantasy tv shows/books inspires me to just write more of that crap. What have I become...
I love that crap! Unashamedly. Completely. And it's what I like to scribble about too. Enjoy yourself. School's out.
Horror movies. I was five or six when I watched Alien with my mom, and has been addicted ever since, but I also often get annoyed at the stupid characters and ridiculous decisions they make. Sure, go check that strange noise out in the dark forest in the middle of nowhere on your own. When every single warning light is flashing like crazy, it's probably not just a glitch in the system. If the natives have been afraid of a certain place for thousands of years, maybe strolling in there without a care in the world isn't the best idea you've had today. Two thirds of your friends are dead within a few hours after you all got death threats? Probably a coincidence. You're probably safe. Or take one of my favorite, all time dumbest conversations. I'm talking about... Hatched 2, of course. Scary swamp. Supposedly haunted. Very dangerous. "Why are we so many people here?" "Because there's safety in numbers." "That makes sense." "Alright, people! Let's split up into pairs and explore this incredibly dangerous swamp in groups of two!" "..." So I decided I could do better, and started writing horror stories without these silly clichés. If there's a strange noise in the forest, maybe check it out with some friends? You're out in the middle of nowhere, someone die, and you... go home? Sure, that might work.
All kinds of stuff. Movies - I'm a huge classic movie fan. Other books. Art. Ideas in general. The world around me. Music. My WIP was inspired by a photo. I came across this boy wearing a fairy crown and wondered what in the world he was done up about. I didn't know much about cosplay and instead of googling it made up my own reason. He's in a tv series. And that's how I got my idea.
I wrote the lyrics to a song as a reaction to the reaction I saw people have of something in the news this week and a development in that story tonight made me want to write the music to it as well. I'm just going to say, I react and I write, about anything that gets a reaction out of me, as far as my song writing goes.
A combination of things. ive taken little bits and pieces from shows, movies, comics, games and even just pictures, and ended up turning them into concepts and characters. For individual scenes i go through a library of songs to determine what i want the mood to be.
