Write all of them. I did. You'll find comfort in some and lack of ability in others. Do what comes naturally while you write.
If you're looking for "what pays," don't discount Romance. They sell those bodice-rippers by the ton.
Probably the best genre for anyone to write is the one they love to read the most. I would start with one you're very familiar with as a reader. That tends to pay off.
Don't write to a genre. Write a story that can then be categorised in a genre. Just write a story and see where it lands.
What is the best genre to write really depends on what you mean when you ask the question, and it’s probably the wrong question to be asking, to be honest. What makes something the best? The best to whom? If you’re asking us what we think you should write, I recommend starting with the approach others have already recommended here. What do you enjoy reading? If you’ve written before, what did you enjoy writing? Look within, young padawan. If you really want to get metaphysical about you, you can meditate on it. What is the best genre for you? If you’re naturally interested in fantasy or sci-fi, for example, I’d wager you have a propensity for whatever genre that may be. Don’t overthink it. If you just start writing I’m sure you’ll gravitate towards the best genre for you. I really like Selbbin’s advice here. It’s really solid. Just write! Picking a genre first can be counterintuitive. Write your story first, your imagination will pull you in the right direction.
