The Attack on Titan soundtrack places me in a variety of settings. “Barricades”, in particular, inspires me when I’m writing something dystopian.
Not 100% sure this counts but whenever I do a battle scene for my character Suzaku I listen to FIRE from the Sailor Moon musicals (Sera Myu among fans). And when I wrote a very important scene for another character, Zhuque, I listened a lot to Yuki Kaji’s version of Part Of Your World.
Assassin's Creed II's soundtrack by Jesper Kyd is impeccable. This soundtrack transported my soul to other places, to other dimensions man. Look what you've done. Now I'm revisiting happy times from my childhood. Music unlocks that part of my brain that I largely lost from aging, where you just day dream and let your mind wander to never before seen vistas and landscapes and places and people. (Mainly instrumental music, or choirs. Lyrics tend to snap me out of that zone.)
Not always. Regardless of setting whenever I have a sneaky/theivy/ assassiny moment I hear 'Hall of The Mountain King'....of course, I love the Apocalyptica version so that might be part of it, Metal and Classic go really well together....
Goes pretty well with breakcore too. If that's not breakcore, please excuse me, I'm calling it what my friend called it. On topic: I find atmospheric soundtracks tend to help my writing of setting more, so Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Inception (even though I've never seen the film), anything epic and heavy really.
There was a game called Far cry III. Listening to its music is thoroughly recommended for any writer: If it's been already suggested, please accept my apology.
World's Away - Strange Advance. Canadian 80s Rock. My setting right now is a film set on a ex-ski resort for a post apocalyptic tv show featuring a cast of has-beens from straight to video. I like the otherworldy high drama of this song.
I know neither of these really fits with the Sci-fi aspet, but well it takes all kinds outside the box to make the rest of it work. Ok, maybe one that does fit the Sci-fi bit.
not setting related, but i was writing a scene where my MC confronts her feelings about another main character, and randomly, "I'd Rather Be With you" by Bootsy Collins comes on my Pandora station and TOTALLY fits the scene
I guess if you're writing about a stalker, The Police have: Every Breath You Take I'll Be Watching You I suppose these songs could help with the mood?
