What would be a good book to read to understand detective work?

Discussion in 'Research' started by U.G. Ridley, Nov 12, 2016.

I've discovered that writing a convincing and realistic detective is really hard, mostly because I keep forgetting all the terminology and investigative methods used in police and detective work. So, where could I go to get better at this stuff? Doesn't have to be a fictional book, or a non-fiction book for that matter. It can be articles, websites, videos, whatever. Anything would be very appreciated.

I found this book to be very helpful as a first look:

Police Procedure & Investigation: A Guide for Writers - Lee Lofland

If your character leans more into the private investigation realm (or is a rogue detective):

Navigating the Legal Minefield of Private Investigations - Ron Hankin

I hear this guy named Ryan Elder has a book coming out sometime in the next fourteen years that is a comprehensive look at the world of law and investigative work.
