What would you do with $1million? What about $10 billion?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Some Guy, May 18, 2018.

$1million: I would settle all debts, send my son to college, and live a quiet life.

$10billion: I would buy a carefully chosen spot of land for a new country, get a million people, and show the world how to live.

    Or

For ten years, I would manipulate media, tell everyone it's coming, warn governments that it's coming, plan everything publicly, watch 'em squirm as the public devours politicians and captains of finance. Then just buy the Presidency, force a Constitutional Convention, and reboot government.
    Bastille Day is coming!

One Million would see me breathe a sigh of relief and a release of daily concerns.

Ten Billion... Even just One Billion would be an amount of money that would render the very concept of money arbitrary for me. I have a very simple, low-cost life. I would keep one of those billions for myself and do the same as above, a second billion would go to ensuring all my family was well cushioned. The rest I would use to create some sort of program for homelessness.

For a million, I’d spend it on paying family debts, college for my sister and me, and then the rest would go to buying a car and living on my own. I don’t really know how far a million dollars would go, at least where I live. My family’s house, which isn’t much to look at and cost $500k eighteen years ago, probably is worth a little more than a million right now. I probably wouldn’t stay here, though, so who knows...

For ten billion, I’d do everything above, and then make sure my family members were all taken care of for the rest of their lives. After that, I’d probably use the rest on buying a big piece of land and dedicating it to rehabilitating horses and other animals who have suffered from neglect/abuse. I have a friend who wants to be an equine chiropractor, and I want to do something related to medical science (either a large animal vet or a nurse practitioner), so maybe the two of us would find a way to do it somehow.

If I got a million? I’d invest it in some Vanguard ETFs and let it grow for 20 years, then enter the old money club.

10 Billion? I don’t know, get my name on some opera houses or a building at a big college, maybe donate a couple billion to some clean water project and get my name immortalized on a bunch of wells or something.

A million I would split up and invest most of it, try to acquire enough assets to sustain a quite lifestyle then retire now in the country and write or paint.

With ten billion I would probably be launch an aerospace technologies company and do whatever I could to help humans push outwards. I’d plan on retiring in a few decades on Mars and write or paint.

He renders hundreds, if not thousands of people homeless every time he has a temper tantrum :)

With a million? Chuck it into a retirement fund and sleep soundly. Ten billion? I'd be hiring the best biologists to work on a virus like in that Dan Brown book that I only saw the trailer for. Everybody worries about human extinction, but nobody actually consciously works to bring it about.

With 0ne million I’d skip that whole annoying regular job thing and live off my writing, plus the random one million.

With ten billion, let’s see, where do I start? I’d do some random things that would probably cause everyone to consider me a bit eccentric. Like, I’ve always wanted to see what would happen if someone gave a few million dollars to a random child. I’d try to help out other writers and other artistic types so they could also leave the work force and have more time for their craft. I’d pay some networks to keep my favorite TV shows from getting cancelled, and probably try and get a few revived.

Oh, and of course, how could I forget my longstanding dream of going to an open house and just casually trying to buy the house like I’m just buying a candy bar at a gas station? I’ve always wanted to see the reaction to that.

Yeah I have occasional visions of buying the entire housing community just so I can tell my homeowners association to fcuk off, then dissolve it - on live TV!

With a million Id spend half of it on alcohol and women of easy virtue, the other half I'd waste.

With ten billion I'd start a fund to help indie authors get started, and fund the defence of the cocky gate plaintiffs.

Is it true that a Billion in the UK is only a hundred million? I mean, even so, that's a lot of money, but that'd mean that 10 billion UK would only be 1 billion US, which might affect some of the answers.

For me? With a million, I'd definitely quit working. I'd probably write "full time" but full time writing for me is only a couple hours a day. The rest of the time I'd hang out with friends and family, garden, play with animals... do all the stuff I actually enjoy doing.

With ten billion (ten thousand million)? That's the point where money becomes power. I'd probably have a few "pet" projects locally (resources for people living in poverty, animal welfare, environmental protection) and use the rest to start a network of not-for-profit industries that pay workers in developing countries a fair wage for safe work. The products could be marketed as socially/environmentally responsible (although the shipping would put a strain on the "environmentally" responsible aspects) and any profits could be poured back in to expansion. Yay!

One million? Call up my real estate buddy and get in some commercial real estate investments.

10 billion? Give away 9 to research on Neurological disorders, Cancers of all kinds and lastly A.I. I'll keep 1 in the bank and live like the bum I always pretend to be. I'm a simple man, no amount of money could change that. Ever.

One million won't do to much in that department, or at least not here in California. But yeah, for 1 million i'd settle all debts and put my ass through school, while budgeting the rest to live off of for what I assume will be several years.

10 billion, now we are talking.... I would set some aside to live off of for the rest of my life, budgeting it carefully and the rest, Moon let's go into some real estate, buddy. :p . get some commercial properties.

One million: Put it in the bank after I pay some shit off, finance grad-school and college for both my kids.

Ten Billion: Put it in the bank and look down on all the plebs for not knowing how rich I am. I'll laugh like a 1950's villain and grow a mustache (or buy one if it doesn't grow properly), then I'll end every argument by saying something like, "if only you knew...if only you knew...," shaking my head as I walk away, secure in the knowledge that I'm, ultimately, a better person than he or she is. When I'm old, I'll likely sit in boxers in my front lawn and shout at people as they walk by about things like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk and how they commoditized our data and sold it without giving us a cent.

You may be thinking, "Why do you need ten billion dollars to do all that?" I don't, but ten billion would give me an air of purpose, thereby justifying my poor life-decisions.

One million? Go someplace nice (British Columbia!) and buy a really beautiful house.

Ten billion? I'd establish a really excellent education program for bright kids. There are programs around for special-needs kids; bright kids tend to be neglected. ("Oh, they're smart. They'll figure everything out for themselves.") This program would not just include STEM subjects, but also arts, music, physical training, etc. Everything.

And I'd take some money to promote long hair and speedos as appropriate summer wear for guys. Just 'cause I like them. Short hair and boxer shorts are utterly sexless, and I want male eye candy in my declining years! :p

I think that's a speedo, but it'd take the $10 billion for me to get my face close enough to check the tag.

Well. With 1 million? I would pay off my debts and I’d buy a house in switzerland, get a menial job and work quietly and live in peace whilst getting a little stipend from the interest.

With 10 billion? I would do the same as above, except I wouldn’t work and instead spend my days writing casually and living a quiet and peaceful live.

1 million or 10 billion: I'd give it all back, and if possible ensure no one knew I'd won/found/or inherited it.

Windfall money from lotteries or inheritance for lower to middle income people almost always results in loss of friends and family due to shifts in the nature of relationships and perceived power and ownership, a degradation of relationships from emotion and experience-based to transaction or debt-based, and personal psychosis. Look at William Post or Evelyn Adams for examples of how this would play out.

Even if I passed the money off, simply knowing I'd won it would probably mess with my head forever, as I'd have a superiority complex. If the military ever found out I'd be discharged due to a "Change of circumstances", as someone with large sums of money are not allowed to serve because it creates a conflict of interest where superiors might show favor for hope of getting kickbacks.

@zoupskim Man, did you really have to bring us a reality check. :p

This is true, you could reference the Lottery Curse, even my Pharmacy Manger references it when it comes to windfalls. Thankfully I don't have friends, and i'm pretty much a lone wolfe. Also I dont' give two shits about my shitty family. So i'm covered here. :p Also my disdain for humanity prevents me from doing anything charitable, it'll wall be fore me... and my benefit. and when I die, the State can burn in hell, i'll make sure the last dime is spent before that moment. :p

I don't know about people with large sums not being allowed to serve, that sounds weird. But I get the psychological toll it could have, but again when you are already cynical and facetious as I am, it may not matter. :p
