What's The Best Title You've Created?

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Masked Mole, Jun 1, 2015.

This can be a title for a novel, short story, poem, etc. I was just interested to hear everyone's personal favorite they have created.
I think the best title I've ever created is either Tough Crowd (a book about a comedian) or Marching Orders (my current WIP about the Vietnam War). Both are double entendres that make sense once the book is read in its entirety.
    Anyway, let's hear yours.

I liked the short story I won one of the flash fiction contests with, "Severance Package." It was about an employee that showed up naked in front of his boss and his family.

Only have one trilogy planned, so can't really claim my best title there, however I came up with (what I consider) a cool name for some cycling coaching +/- utility software: Velonium. :D

Whenever I offer people some of my stories to read, the title they always seem to pick is Jeremiah Crowlock And The City Of The Clockwork Sun, so I guess that's got to be up there.

I wrote a poem called Narcissistic Attrition. Thought it was a pretty cool title.

I liked the title of my first novel: Sparks of Life
It's not a very good book, but it's a great title

I wrote a poem for one of my CRW classes called "The monkey situation" and it was about DMT.

Also, I'm writing a novel and I'm stuck between the titles "The tale of the northern entities" or "The juggernaut"

    What do you guys think?

The juggernaut sounds more direct and the book I'd more likely to pick up. The other title (which I've forgotten already) is a bit waffley

Learned a new word from your title! Attrition.

What's the genre? - the first sounds a little text-book-y. The juggernaut sounds too familiar.

My favorite title is one that I've never mentioned on this site - it's top secret. :)
Most of my titles are pretty straight forward but here are some ( the runners up ) that I like -
    Not Pink
The Worms of Wicher-Woo ( I like the alliteration )
    Smackdolligus
    Rot
    Vulture Bait
Frosted Gothic Lollipop ( probably my wildest title )- which has to do with a young girl harassing a blind man when he purchases and moves into an old gothic mansion, she'd claimed as her own.

I've been thinking obsessively for the last few weeks about how to make an "anti-zombie" story scary, and just last night / this morning I came up with the most perfect combination of title and plot device that I absolutely need to start outlining and writing for: "Ghouls are Made to be Broken"

I have a two-parter with the names Entropy and Heat Death. It's dorky but I like it. I also have a post-apocalyptic story named Epoch, though my brother gets partial credit for that one - the dev title was just 'apoc' and he misread it as epoch, then I realized that was actually a pretty apt name, hahah. I tell myself I'd've come up with it on my own eventually

I would be drawn to the latter if I saw it on a bookshelf or website - although that could just be my nerdy gamer side being reminded of enemies from the Final Fantasy franchise.

I don't think I really have a best title. I've often been complimented on titles but I don't really see it myself. One of my own I did really like was Cinderella Boy, but I later found out it's also the name of a boxing-related film whereas my story was about trying to petition for the legalisation of gay marriage.

When I was 13 or 14, I wrote a story called Legend of the Dragons. It's nothing original, but it stuck with me, of all the little titles I've ever come up with. It has a certain ring about it that I still really like to this day, and it's one of those childhood stories I'd like to reuse/rewrite and finally make something proper out of it :)

Sadly, it never got much further than the title. Never could figure out what that damn toilet was up to, let alone what the hell "titular hypocrisy" meant. But it rolled off my tongue, and conjured images of overflowing poopers, so it stuck with me.
