When to use a ";" or semi-colon?

    This thread should be retitled; the mystery of the semicolon; revealed. ;)

    No seriously, thanks everyone for finally providing a clear concise explanation of this. I'm starting to think there is a conspiracy acting within my word processing program. It tries to throw these in at least one time per page....it couldn't have anything to do with the way I write, right?
