Where can I generate a list of names with only certain letters?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by rktho, Apr 8, 2017.

I've decided to take some advice and incorporate some real names into my novel for familiarity's sake. So I need names that DON'T contain the letters b, c, j, l, m, o, p, q, u, w, x or y. The language I'm deriving these names from is very limited. I have a couple names that already belonged to my characters like Kaesi, Nat, and Zahn (like Timothy Zahn), and a couple I'm considering like Dash, Shard, etc. Can you help boost my arsenal? I don't anticipate needing very many but it's good to be prepared. Is there some kind of search engine where I can look for baby names that only contain certain letters?

PS, to my readers who prefer dramatic names-- don't worry, I'm only changing a few.

Maybe you could use a scrabble search where you can put in the letters you want to use and see what words it suggests, but they would be real words not necessarily names.

That could work. I'd like a few real names though. But yeah, words like Ash, Shard, Shank...
Oh! I just thought of a name. Kant.

I'm not sure what software you have access to, but here's how I would do it.

Let's say I have a list of names, but I don't want names with the letter 'R' in them. I would copy that list into Microsoft Excel (I'm only doing the first 20 names for demonstration purposes) as shown below:

    Abelard
    Ada
    Adal
    Adal
    Adalard
    Adalbert
    Adalgar
    Adalhard
    Adalheid
    Adalheida
    Adali
    Adalicia
    Adalie
    Adaliz
    Adalric
    Adalrik
    Adalwen
    Adalwin
    Adalwine
    Adalwolf

I would do CTRL+H to bring up the Find and Replace dialogue box, then replace all 'r's with three non-asterisk special characters in a row (in this case, &^). If I were doing multiple letters, I would also replace those letters with &^ at this time. The list will now look like this:

    Abela&^d
    Ada
    Adal
    Adal
    Adala&^d
    Adalbe&^t
    Adalga&^
    Adalha&^d
    Adalheid
    Adalheida
    Adali
    Adalicia
    Adalie
    Adaliz
    Adal&^ic
    Adal&^ik
    Adalwen
    Adalwin
    Adalwine
    Adalwolf
    Adalwolfa
    Adel
    Adela
    Adelaide
    Adelbe&^t
    Adele
    Adelha&^d
    Adelheid
    Adelheide
    Adelina
    Adelinda
    Adeline

I would CTRL+H again and replace *& with nothing. The asterisk symbol indicates that all characters before and including & should be replaced. The list will now look like this:

    ^d
    Ada
    Adal
    Adal
    ^d
    ^t
    ^
    ^d
    Adalheid
    Adalheida
    Adali
    Adalicia
    Adalie
    Adaliz
    ^ic
    ^ik
    Adalwen
    Adalwin
    Adalwine
    Adalwolf
    Adalwolfa
    Adel
    Adela
    Adelaide
    ^t
    Adele
    ^d
    Adelheid
    Adelheide
    Adelina
    Adelinda
    Adeline

Repeat the same process, except now replacing ^* with nothing. The list will now look like this:

    Ada
    Adal
    Adal

    Adalheid
    Adalheida
    Adali
    Adalicia
    Adalie
    Adaliz

    Adalwen
    Adalwin
    Adalwine
    Adalwolf
    Adalwolfa
    Adel
    Adela
    Adelaide

    Adele

    Adelheid
    Adelheide
    Adelina
    Adelinda
    Adeline

I now have the r-less names I want, but there are a bunch of pointless carriage returns. If you copy the list into Notepad (to remove the table formatting), then copy from Notepad to Microsoft Word, simply do a CTRL+H in Microsoft Word and replace "^p^p" with "^p" repeatedly until no useless spaces exist. ^p is the code recognized by Microsoft Word to indicate where a carriage return exists: we're basically replacing all instances of multiple carriage returns with single ones. My list of r-less names is now complete:

    Ada
    Adal
    Adal
    Adalheid
    Adalheida
    Adali
    Adalicia
    Adalie
    Adaliz
    Adalwen
    Adalwin
    Adalwine
    Adalwolf
    Adalwolfa
    Adel
    Adela
    Adelaide
    Adele
    Adelheid
    Adelheide
    Adelina
    Adelinda
    Adeline

This works in Microsoft Excel/Word, but if you're using different programs, the syntax might be different. In any case, best of luck!

Looks like there are a few baby name generators, such as this one, where you can input letters you want included.

Are there any where I can exclude letters? That's really what I need.

Google names based on gender. And if you feel adventurous add a country in the search.

    Example:

    (type in search bar)
    Lists of girls names
    (press enter/return)
    (sift through results)
(open links, and sift through names until you find one that you like)
(return to search page and continue search, or close tab when done)

It is not rocket-surgery, it just takes a bit of time is all.

    Good Luck.

I'll help you out by giving you the letters that are not the ones listed.

    a d e f g h i k n r s t v x z

By generating a list with these letters, you have excluded the ones you don't want. Unless you just really need a program that has to exclude for whatever reason.
