I worked in the security business for several years and experienced many incidences of downright negative and aggressive behaviour, generally borne out of ignorance and lack of moral fibre. Where such moral slackness comes from is a question with many possible answers. From my experience, a lack of parental control and moral education in the home leads to youths flaying in a pool of dead-end competitiveness where being as bad as you can lifts you closer to the top of the shyt barrall. Youngsters in lower socio-economic areas, with low self asteem and limited self awareness due to negative socialisation, tend to be extra vulnerable to the scurges of drugs and gangsterism so prevalent in our society, whether that be Ireland, Britain, or elsewhere.
It's a horrible feeling being on the receiving end of nastiness or negativity, especially if it results in physical, mental or emotional harm. How do we combat it? A difficult one to answer when there's so much of it around. I'm sure all methods have been tried, with varying levels of success and failure. In my opinion, though, involving youth in activities that help build self respect for themselves and others proves most successful. From a community development approach; if you do good, it'll come back to you by the very nature of being positive. That's why so many schemes in deprived areas, by the nature of their positive approach to the youth, have such beneficial results. Not in the short term, I accept, but more times than not, community participation helps build morale, and decent morality, amongst those we'll eventually depend on to carry the torch forward.

And how these dissorders seem to come in and out of vogue. In the 70’s it was all about schizophrenia and multiple personality dissorder; in the 80’s it was very in to suffer from OCD; in the 90’s everyone was bipolar (you had a choice of 1, 2, or cyclothymia); and then ADD/ADHD made it’s big appearance on the stage.*

*I was in my junior year at U.F. when all the kids with ADD matriculated in one fell swoop. I was good friends with one of my prior professors in anthropology and he was very taken aback by the sudden flood of medical slips explaining all of these special needs and considerations for students with ADD. Last semester, maybe two students with slips; this semester, maybe two students who didn’t have slips. It was also the semester when Pharm-parties made their debut in Gainseville. Connection?

BTW, this is not a comment on the validity of these disorders, but on the seemingly fashion-dictated vagaries of methodology used in diagnosis.

Wow, this sounds like a scary incident, tanished. Road rage is horrible these days. My husband rides a bike to work several days a week (both for the excercise and to save gas). He rides on a good wide shoulder lane, but says people still give him the finger, honk their horns, or play like their gonna run him over, swerving back to their lane at the last minute. Makes me pretty nervous about him riding.

Also makes me nervous when I'm out driving in my car. Several people in a town near mine have been shot by strangers recently over small things like somebody passing someone else. It really freaks me out.

Sadly my method of reasponse to these angry people tends to be, "Either do something or shutup!" and 99.9% of the time they shut up and leave, sulking as they go. I don't do arguing back and forth like these people want, if they are really that mad at me then they should go ahead and swing or if they really don't plan on doing anything than get out of my face. LOL Like I said works 99.9% of the time the other .1% take a swing. :( Maybe not the smartest approch but i'm a big guy, and I never hang out alone so the other person tends to get pulled back before I get mad enough to swing myself.

I would call some one and idiot for using my approach, hell i'm an idiot for useing it, I just can't help myself.
