Hey y'all, This is something very useful i found moments ago. I don't know whether if people over here have already checked this before over internet. So Below are the 25 important points you should consider very important for your novel. The source link is given at the bottom. http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2012/05/29/25-things-to-know-about-writing-the-first-chapter/
Au contraire, mon frere; if you didn't get past the first 'tip', then you missed a lot of good advice for neo writers. Of course us old hands already know all of the ways to write a blockbuster of a novel. And have done it, many times. I could offer an example, but my two week probationary period is not over.
Sounds like "tips for writing the first chapter for squirrels on speed." I mean, yeah, I get a lot of it, I get why we should follow this advice, but I do have a better attention span than the dumbo this writer expects me to be, and even if you start with a bang and boom, if your writing moves on technique-wise as gracefully as a a cartful of barrels down a rocky hill, it still won't draw me in. However, for a first-time writer, it probably is a good idea to cater to one-pagers. Slow starts for seasoned writers and all that, I suppose.
I wonder why it had to be 25? A lot of the points were either completely redundant or simply logical results of an earlier point. It was sort of like John Madden on writing. At least there wasn't any explicitly bad advice offered.
No steak worthy of being called a porterhouse is only 8 oz. Double that weight and you're getting close. One of those tips should have been about research.
I'm sorry, but I found it quite hilarious. I think it was helpful too, but I can't help but think the writer of these tips was trying to quirky and helpful at the same time. I liked it a lot, thanks for sharing it.
This is what happens when site owners pay SEO companies to optimize their sites for search engines. They outsource link building overseas (to places like india) because they're terrible people and they don't mind giving people pennies a day to sign up on forums and spam them with nofollow links to their client sites. It gives you a good idea of the motives and ethics that went into writing this article.
I like when (summer reading) authors have their first death scene on page one. My main character has killed 30% of the people he has encountered (so far) in 1 1/2 books. Summer reading! If the reader is sitting still, by the pool, the characters need to be dropping like flies and doing a lot of vigorous exercise. Otherwise your readers get fat. Take care of your readers!
