    Phantom Train

    Somber mood, pending doom
    invades air, lingers gloom
    infusing fear in stagnate night,
    hungry fog devours light,
muting colors to grays and blacks,
ravenous it creeps along the tracks
Like vapor beast of hazy smoke,
    nothing escapes its silver cloak
    Silouhette loiters on depot’s dock
alone, he waits in foggy dark
    He runs from himself
    from here to there
    anywhere,
    everywhere,
    and nowhere;
    desperate to escape
    his troubled mind,
    terrified, restless...searching to find
    love in someone,
    something,
    anything
    lest he go madly insane
    spinning his wheels
    in a speeding brain,
    riding forever,
    alone,
    on his phantom train

I had a wonderful time with my first poetry contest, adding mystery and intrigue to the writing experience via anonymous entries, as well as a friendly competitive spirit. Great poems everyone, and so diverse in content...all from a single photo as a focal point. Love the concept! I’m elated about winning, yet, as writers, we are all winners by challenging ourselves to put pen to paper (equivalent to fingers on a keyboard) expressing our creativity through the written word. It’s a passion!

I’m new in the writer’s forum arena and the critique process. I’m finding it most enjoyable and useful as I learn from other’s work...their knowledge and preferences, which run the gambit from aligning with academia protocol to rebellious coloring outside the ‘rules’. All valid in my opinion.

Thanks to all who found ‘Phantom Train’ worthy of a vote. Looking forward to the next one!

Congratulations, @Dolphin laughter . I ended up voting for your poem. I loved the way you turned the mist into a monster. Good job! A well deserved win.

Thanks @dbesim! Hope to be participating again. Exercises such as this contest ramps up the opportunity to practice a craft I’m finding is my current passion. Where it all leads is still jelling in the ethers.

Congrats. I like the pace of the piece, it reads like the sound of a train on the tracks.
But then, maybe I'm just cuckoo.

Thanks @Shnette for the the pat on the back and saying my poem, sounds like a train on the tracks
Cuckoo your not...for the tickety-tock of the cuckoo clock is strangely similar to clickety-clack of a speeding train on the railroad tracks

We will have to pretend however, that the occasionally cuckoo of the clock is the toot toot of an engine whistle....which may be a strrrrretch! Thanks again!
