    the fear of missing out

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by katina, Dec 11, 2018.

Is this a common phobia or something else?

I don't think it is a technical phobia, but missing out can suck.
It just depends on what it is, and the reason for missing out
    on it (whatever it is).

Like if you want to go to some kind of event or whatever,
but you have something else to do and can't make it, or
simply anxiety keeps you from going out to it.
    That kinda stuff.

"Fear of missing out, or FOMO, is "a pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent".[2] This social anxiety[3] is characterized by "a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing".[2]FOMO is also defined as a fear of regret,[4] which may lead to a compulsive concern that one might miss an opportunity for social interaction, a novel experience, a profitable investment, or other satisfying events.[5]In other words, FOMO perpetuates the fear of having made the wrong decision on how to spend time since "you can imagine how things could be different".[4]

Fear of missing out (FOMO) is described as by an individual’s desire to constantly stay connected with their friends and peers. This is specifically in relation to social media ever-growing technology. Studies have been done to show and prove social media’s impact on people experiencing FOMO. It comes back to psychological needs that depend on social media sites. This has developed into the increasing use during times of schooling or sleep. This increase leads individuals to become more and more dependent on these sites. [6]"

It's getting worse because of stupid social media such as Facebook. There are so many events happening, all the time and you are just so busy with your life that you try not to get overwhelmed. It's very easy to feel overwhelmed, especially now during the pre-holiday season because everyone is trying to mush together as many social events as they can because we're apparently socially bulimic during the holidays. X.x

Fuck this. I would rather try and enjoy the moments of peace and quiet I have than feel anxiety because I chose to stay home in order to be able to rest.

Life is too hectic as it is to start worrying about things I have no control over.

No. I do not possess this fear. It would seem to be naturally linked to an obsession with and/or subservience to external loci of control, a concept I abhor in absolute.

I read 'missing out' as exclusion from the group. That's a great and universal subject for writing.

There were some cases in the past where I experienced FOMO involving sex. Like, I had to have it over anything and then when I got it, I was cool for a while and then the cycle repeated itself.

I can't even begin to imagine what some millennials go through when it comes to every social experience. It's impossible to be everywhere all the time. Sometimes it's better to be chained than to be free and wanting.
