How to write a suspense sequence

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by Xeroshi, Jun 28, 2016.

While i wouldn't call the book i'm writing to be a thriller its leans entirely on the fantasy side of things, but my question is how do you write a suspense scene. I'm fairly new to writing so i'm not used to these things

To build tone (whether it's suspense, horror, romance, humor or anything else), you have to build that tone in little ways, and then build up throughout the whole scene.

Include lots of things that are suspenseful...pursuers, traps in the way, tight time deadlines, etc.

Have lots of stakes - the character needs to have important things on the line, that people can relate to and care about. Also, readers have to care about the character as a person, or they won't care what happens to them.
