I mean fiction that actually makes you say "I want to live in this world." I think Elfquest is the only one I know so far (I've yet to read the Culture novels, but they've also been described as such). Star Trek just seems far too campy to count. Any recommendations?
Utopian? I can name plenty of dystopian. In fact I'm not sure I know of a single utopian novel, probably because they're more likely to fall under the fantasy branch, and I can't abide fantasy. Sorry, that post was about as much use to you as a chocolate teacup. This is the only help I can offer: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/utopia Although I notice that list has GO's 1984 in there, so probably not compiled with much thought.
That's all we seem to produce these days. One hellscape after another. I think this is a bad mistake.
It's because it's so much easier. A novel is driven by a series of terrible events for the MC. If that character lives in a utopian society it's far more difficult to give them problems, because by the very definition of a utopian society, there won't be any problems. Utopian novels always end up as an oxymoron anyway, for the above reasons.
I don't think I'm making the same point you are. Elfquest for instance, shows a society that fulfills every sort of need - sexual, spiritual, whatever. It has problems, but none of those problems are inherent in it. That's why I call it utopian.
