I suggest perusing one of the numerous baby-naming sites that are out there. Some do have categories like "unique names" or names that could be used for either gender, etc. You can find these sites by googling.
I'd like to second what chicagoliz said. I have a couple of those baby naming sites close at hand. The Social Security site allows you to generate a list showing how any particular name's popularity changed over time. You can also get a list of popular names for a given year. Of course that data is for the US.
Haha, you could use the placeholder names genny (generic) and stan (stand-in) until you found a more permanent solution.
I'm not sure if I quite understand what you're after but once you've considered your comon Charlie and Lesley (unisex names) you can have names like Fred, short for Frederick or Frederika/Freda, Laura or Lawra short for Laurance/Lawrance, George short for Georgina, Emma short for Emmanuel and anything like that which can be made into the other gender.
Billie, Bobbie, Courtney, Darcy, Frankie, George, Jo, Jess, Kim, Nicky, Noel, Robin, Sam, Stevie - that's what I've come up with off the top of my head.
Don't forget Shawn, Marion (John Wayne's real first name), Mel, Alex, Willie, Rosie, Mattie, Jules...
good and unique are somewhat contradictory in this context, so i don't think you can get answers that will be both... if they're good ones, they'll most likely be much used... and if unique, they might not be all that 'good'...
