What's a good name for a Sci fi Hero?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Spiderman, Oct 29, 2012.

I'm writing a science fiction story. I'm not sure if it'll be space opera or possibly another kind of sci-fi, like cyberpunk or steampunk or something like that. Haven't decided what subgenre, or combination thereof, it'll be. But if involves a young hero, with some sidekicks. What should I name him? The name should be catchy and sound nice, especially when comparing it to the rest of the events in the story.

What are some tips for costumes? A name for him?

Aww, come on. It's your story. How will you manage if you can't even come up with a name on your own? Shake the dust out of your imagination, and give it a good workout!

    Costumes?

Seriously, don't give up so easily. Imagination works best if you use it, and your self-confidence will benefit as well.

The Unnamed Man. It gives him a sense of mystery and awe, at the same time subtly communicating your plight of names with your readers, who will undoubtedly understand.

But seriously, just use a sci-fi name generator and poke around until you find a name that sounds right. Then you alter it(for example remove all the apostrophes and add vowels for those names that are mostly just consonants) and slam it into your story.

Or else use a placeholder name and use Find And Replace after you've finished to put in the name. You may even fall in love with the placeholder name. I used the placeholder names One, Two and Three for a humor story about three stooge-like characters, and realized that those were actually really good names for them.

I'm sorry. I was going to post this earlier, and held back, but I have to say it: If you can't even think of a name, what confidence do I have that your story will be worth my time and energy to read? Writing requires a fair bit of creativity, and while seeking a little help with ideas and suggestions is encouraged and important, this makes me wonder what part of the writing process actually appeals to you, because creativity doesn't seem to be a driving factor. Sorry if that sounds harsh.

Anyway, try: Ace Murdoch (brother of zapp brannigan - "We have failed to uphold Brannigan's Law. However I did make it with a hot alien babe. And in the end, is that not what man has dreamt of since first he looked up at the stars?")

    This says it all.

I'd suggest creating yourself a character sheet to give your character some bones, once you get a feel for his/her personality you'll find naming them easier, like naming your child so to speak, look up some names and one will just jump at you for your character.

Any name you want. Sci Fi here's don't have to have some strange name. They can have normal names like normal people.

What's a good normal sci fi name? Or, what's a normal name that can be spelled in a wierd way to make it unique? What are some names that can be used like that?

Hmm. I was thinking I wanted to go for a catchy name for a protagonist, or one of the main ones. I'll decide that very soon.

I usually figure out who my character is before I try to name them. I would also imagine that knowing what sort of sci-fi you are writing would have a strong influence on naming. That doesn't mean you can't name him first, and take the name as an inspiration for what type of story it is, but to me that makes my brain work backwards.

Good observation. What do you mean by what "kind" of sci fi?

I suggest you google sci-fi sub-genres and take a tour.
