Access to the server logs? *puts on glasses* That's easy, just do: Code: sudo apt-get install hacks ./hacks serverlog.log chmod 1337 serverlog.log nano serverlog.log Okay, maybe not.
When I log on using chrome, it doesn't happen. When I log on using IE, it happens. @ginger I'll try clicking remember when I enter my credentials, but I have dim hopes of success as entering my credentials properly inevitably results in a repeat of the pop up.
I don't use IE, but I'm not experiencing it in Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. Could you try clearing your cache? The popup was from a password protected directory (demo board), so your login info for the site won't work. I'll try to look into it, but in the meantime the credentials admin/test*** should work.
daniel... why can't we send pms now?... the option isn't included in the 'popup' that replaced the drop-down menu under the poster's avatar and i can't find any pm option on the person's profile page, either... only a message option for messages that anyone going to that page can see... are we no longer allowed to send pms to each other?... if so, why?...
@mammamaia It's called a "conversation" now. The way I found it was go onto the person's profile and look at their "about me" info. At the bottom of the page there should be a "Start a Conversation" option.
thanks, but that doesn't sound like a 'private' message to me... and it shouldn't be so 'tucked away' that we have to go hunting for it, if it does stay 'private...
just tried it, tom... and sure enough, it's not private at all... it's out there for anyone to take part in... so we are still without a way to contact each other privately... which is a very necessary option, imo... daniel?
It's not private? How do you know? If so, that really should be changed. Private messages are useful.
The conversations are private. It's just a different name for a PM. The options that one sees at the bottom of the conversations page is to allow one to include other people into a multi-person conversation. You can chose to lock that function so that others are not allowed to be invited into a conversation. This is actually better than the old page which allowed a PM to be forwarded to anyone else without the originator of the PM being aware. It's not open like the Visitor Messages and has nothing to do with the sidebar that says "Join the Conversation".
On the bottom of the PM, aka conversation, you can choose to allow anyone in the conversation to invite anyone else, and you can choose to not allow replies (sounds mean). That suggests the default is, only the person(s) you addressed the PM to can see the conversation. It never crossed my mind that the sidebar which says, "Join the Conversation", meant anything but join the Twitter conversation.
That last bit was more at the general conversation. Since the same word is being used there, I thought that might have been a source of the idea.
The new Conversation style PM's are kind of cool... and It makes the inbox virtually limitless, which is cool... And yeah, I tested it with a link, they are totally private.
If you click on a user's name, it will bring up a box in the middle of the screen without going to their profile. There should be an option 'start a conversation.' With that you can send them an invitation to a conversation which is pretty much a private thread between the two of you. I though it seemed like others might be able to see it, so I sent a link to someone else to a conversation between me and a different person, and the person I sent the link too couldn't open the conversation.
ok... since it's been tested, i guess it works... but it's sure a lot more complicated than the old pm option... i'm also not happy to have to click on my name to see what's waiting for me... the old way of having the number pms and other stuff show under my name was way more efficient and time/trouble-saving...
I personally like it, it's less of a hassle than dealing with an Inbox... I really hated having an Inbox where each individual message showed up. With this, everything shows up under the same conversation... And I don't quite understand how it's harder... the notifications for them should still show up under alerts on the homepage. A little red number will pop up whenever you have a new message in a conversation, or Profile Post (equivalent of a Vistitor message) You don't have to click your name to see them... There is still the Inbox icon in the top right corner of the screen... I'm sure you'll get used to it
My first complaint on looking at the new format is that it is harder to read. Small gray lettering does not stand out, and separator lines are such pale blue as to be almost nonexistent to my tired old eyes. Why is it every generation of everybody's software seems to go more toward pale pastels? I like a snappy display.
ok, call me lazy, but i liked it better when i didn't have to place the cursor over anything to see if i had any pms or whatever...
You still don't. If you have a PM it says so in red under the "inbox", if it's notice of a 'like' or someone adds 'following you' to your name, the red number is under "alerts". I'm pretty sure it's one less step than the old format where you didn't know if the alert was a PM, a mention, or reps without your cursor.
Tried to add this edit to the above post and I got that "internal server error" message again.: In fact, while I'm on the subject, I like the new email notices for PMs because they say who the PM is from and the title instead of just that you have one.
Ok, just uploaded new avatar, it says to use a file at least 200 x 200 px, mine is 555 x 555 px and the avatar is still blurry. Maybe there's a glitch?
