Just like the title says! I'm trying to figure things out and I'm curious as to what the answers might be!
I'd say make the story sound interesting and accessible. Do people in that age group go looking for books that are specific to their age? They are, after all, real adults—not really 'teens' (YA) any more. But as younger adults, they will probably be concerned with finding a partner, establishing a job/career, setting up a home for themselves, maybe traveling via backpack and having adventures, etc. They will also be developing tastes for certain kinds of stories ...science fiction, historical fiction, romantic fiction, horror, thriller, etc. It's a time when they re-invent their relationships with their families as well. They have graduated from being dependent children to independent people, and sometimes that can either cement family relationships or create rifts. I think if you write about these kinds of subjects, you'll find your target audience. I am old (70 now), and these separate genres for different age group thing is more specialised than it was when I was young. We had children's books, of course ...but the next category was 'adult books.' We decided what we wanted to read based on subject matter and writing style, rather than on being in a certain age group.
Oh wow nice coincidence that a lot of those elements are in my book! I'm grinning ear to ear haha. Thanks for the advice. On reddit when I was looking I got a lot of hostility for trying to look into this before the book was done and being unsure about whether to go indie or traditional for some reason.
Well, how to market a book is an issue that most writers are concerned about. I don't understand why you would get a hostile reaction just from asking. It's certainly a legitimate question. Who am I aiming my book at, and how do I get this target audience to notice me? Big question. Again, I was speaking from personal experience, not from any sort of insider knowledge whatsoever. And I'm old. I have no idea what people in your target age bracket are buying these days, or how they go about finding what they want to read. I'm interested in seeing any other responses you might get on this thread, from people who might have a better idea.
IO would think you would want to know where they "hang out" and if your topic appeals to them. Once you find a few interested followers ASK then for help. It is a strong inclination of human nature to want to help.
