Favorite quote from your main character

On my personal computer. I like to keep a running list of favorite quotes I've heard/read. Don't worry, I've cited your character and you, as I cite all the quotes I've heard/read.

 

Oh I was asking more out of curiosity. I figured if the list was on here I might have to check it out. lol

 

"Are you threatening me?"

"I am warning you. These forests have ears, and the trees can speak. These people have endured many hardships Lord Ryske. If you press more on them, you are merely tying the rope around your neck."

"I'll tie the rope about their necks first. They are our slaves after all. They have the right to serve and die."

"I should have elaborated. Press grief on these people, and you will find an arrow lodged in your head very soon. Then they'll string you up, somewhere everyone can see. And last I checked Lord Ryske, arrows don't give two shits about the rights of the person who fires it. They merely go where they are sent."

I know it's more than a line, and the Judge isn't even a main character, but I love this exchange too much.

They keep trying to say I'm crazy. I keep telling them in this perfect, fucking certifiably insane, but utterly perfect world of theirs they wouldn't know crazy until I try taking a bite out of their ass. ~ Tobias.


Both of those are copyrighted by the way. One in a book I co-wrote as a kid & the other which has gone to publishing under a penname. Just saying, don't use them.

Yes, there's an actual stereotypical pimp in a sci-fi. It's a long story, it's a novel! Badum Tshhhh! Next is my favorite, its a bit longer so it's going to have it's own post. Hope that's ok

Favorite is loosely used here because right now, I'm not happy with it. I almost deleted it.

What does Preparation H and myself have in common? Both are medicated and wiped...Hurray for surgery in two days! (sarcasm, because I'm wetting myself in fear)

"Who?"

Her first word in the piece I am working on. She is refusing to acknowledge a form of her name she doesn't like. It is the first time she started to appear like a real character in my head; fractious, irascible and impetuous. She is a child.

 

Is internal monologue OK?

Kyra realized that she was alone, crippled, with an armed, super-powered serial killer who’d already lusted for her at least once in the last hour. And yet felt perfectly safe.

Safer, in fact, than she had ever felt in her life, either before or after Allah had taken her away from Earth. How could that feeling possibly be considered to make sense?​

 

"Alcohol disinfects both physical and emotion wounds."

 

“And I should follow the crazy knife wielding dream invaders because?"

 

This quote comes from the villain in the story I'm working on.
“I need to keep you alive till you have fulfilled your purpose. Like it or not you’re part of the tide of change. Don’t worry though I will take great pleasure in tearing your heart out once I’m done. Almost sounds romantic doesn’t it.”

 

"Chicken?"

 

It's more of a passage, but it's written in first person. Does it count? Anyway, I don't know how well it translates.

"A girl is gazing poetically over the field, and I can't help but immediately fall in love. She didn't smile, when I passed by her, but I smiled as though she had."

 

Ruben looked at the clock on the wall behind them. "It's not even noon, son."
Thane shrugged. "I had a feeling I'd drunk be rather than sober for this."
Taking a seat beside him, Fin rubbed her temples and groaned.

 

Not from my main, but I recently jacked a quote from a real-life overheard conversation for a great zinger from one of my side characters:

"I'm gonna go smoke cigarettes - you want to come watch?"

 

Whenever overwhelmed by the circumstances around them...

"Don't think. Just follow fucking orders."

From a thing about superheroes in World War II:
Black- “As far as you are concerned, I have no past."
Black- “It will be worth it.” West- “They pulled me out of retirement for this crap, it better be worth it.”

From a fantasy thing about a world that is about to change:
Etho- “I believe everything that is not hurtful should be free.”
Apharael- “Do you know the greatest enemy of order? Discontent."

From a thing about a gay couple and their quirky lives:
Marcus’ Mum- “Marci. Are you sure you still want to be with these people over your family?” Marcus- “Hm. Let me think. Nope. Still hate you both.”
Luke- "I think I live with that." Oscar- "Good. There aren't any other available Oscars at this time."

From a thing about an Australian juvie:
Harry- (After him)“ Fuck you faggot!” Dale- “You? Only if you pay.”
Sam- “Mum always said: If you’re gonna fall in love, you better hope you didn’t pick wrong."

And there's so much more.

This is actually from a role-playing game I programmed (sadly still bugged and unplayable after I tried to salvage it from a bricked computer.) The main character, Gracie, joins up with the other party members as a mercenary. She agrees to a contract that she won't abandon them unless their lands go to war with each other, in which case she'll leave peacefully and only fight against them as part of the war effort "in proper form."

If she fails to max out her bonds with any her party members, she leaves the player's control. This is what happens when the others find her again, standing in front of a monstrous blob of living slime:

Gracie: She's strong. Stronger than Amanea can ever hope to be. Without her, Amanea can have no army.

Billy: So what does this mean? Is she on our side now?

Gracie: No. This form is on hers.

The music changes to something slow and longing.

Marie: Gracie, what are--

Gracie: Have you ever done the wrong thing, knowing it was the wrong thing, because you couldn't do otherwise?

This form exists to serve Mother. Without her, it has no purpose.

She rejected Amanea. But not before Amanea drove her insane. Amanea discreetly calls upon her power, and she's no longer aware enough to resist.

But she is still Mother, and she cannot be allowed to die. Even if her death would save Huma.

Royce: Gracie, get out of the way. You can't win this fight.

Gracie: She has given this form strength. It can once more become what it truly is. The contract can be completed.

Two lands are at war. This form is no longer part of your army. And it will fight you now, in proper form.

And that's how you make your main character into your monstrous final boss.

 

I have a whole notepad filled with lines I refer to as [character name].txt, for when a line comes out just hilariously encapsulating a character.

"Sure, she’d almost shot him in the face that one time, but it was all in the past." - dom.txt

For some reason this joke never wears thin to me.
