End of the World / Science Fiction Recommendations

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Breasbooks, Nov 28, 2012.

    Hi all,

Can you recommend some books you really enjoyed that are end of the world type in the science fiction genre?

I need to do my favorite kind of research for getting my own book published....reading!

    Thank you!

    The Stand by Stephen King
    The Road by Cormac McCarthy
    Blindness by Jose Saramago
The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
World War Z by Max Brooks

Those are all of the ones I can think of at the moment. Some of them may not be classified as sci-fi, but they're still end of the world type books.

There are several J. G. Ballard books - don't know if they're in print anymore. The Crystal World, The Burning World - a.k.a The Drought.
High Rise, The Drowned World. If you can find a collection of his short stories too, a lot of them deal with end of the world
    subjects.

Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake is good too (I think it was written before the Year of the Flood, and set after the same disaster - so perhaps read this first)

If you can find a pre-bloat edition of Stephen King's The Stand, it's worth reading. When he became sufficiently famous, he added back most of what had wisely been edited out of the original version.

Larry Niven's novel Lucifer's Hammer is another good one.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The Stand (prebloated version) is my favorite book. I have read it three times. : )

After the flood by P.C Jersild. Compared to some of the others, a very low-voiced drama.

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy farmer is a great one, but a little sad.
