A word you didn't know you wanted

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by J.D. Ray, Feb 21, 2019.

I am reading an article on the re-discovery of a giant bee wherein the author used a word I hadn't heard before. Thanks to the Internet, I could look it up readily (double-click, hover). It apparently means "gigantic". Additionally thanks to the Internet, I can introduce it here:

    Brobdingnagian
    Brob·ding·nag·i·an
    /ˌbräbdiNGˈnaɡēən/

"In addition to its Brobdingnagian size, Wallace's giant bee sports unusually large mandibles, which are often compared to a stag beetle's."

Even given the above pronunciation guide, I still don't know how to pronounce it. I'll track down the audible guide.

Sounds like the journalist is either a perfervid user of the thesaurus or a fan of Jonathan Swift...

Great to hear about the big bee though
