edit's and different ways to go about it

  1. Just found very interesting information about the editing process (again at [http://marcykennedy.com/]). Disclaimer: In my blog I don't claim eternal wisdom or perfection. You follow the advice here of your own free will!

    Development edit:
The advice is, to write a paragraph about each scene. Detail POV's goals. Describe what happens. Include essential plot information which is revealed in this scene. How it affects the character. Total wc after.

This should help in finding plot holes, identify unnecessary scenes, loose endings or pacing changes. The idea is to make the work more rounded. But this analysis probably should be done after the finish line, the little summaries I can write during. That's something I can do by myself :)

    ------------------------

... Then there are things only an editor can help me but I want to write them down anyway, if only that I don't have to go searching for this information a few months down the road (and yes, the finish line is THAT close!)

Line edit: word choice, paragraph flow, cliche sentences, awkward or wordy sentences. Will not involve development edit (or not in as much detail as it should have anyway)

Copy edit: all about grammar and punctuation. Changing passive to active sentences when warranted, eliminate unnecessary words. Also stuff for an editor

And of course, the Proofreading edit. But that one is so far, far down the line (and by then nothing should need to get changed anyway) that I am not going to waste more words on it.

Reason for edit: Last line of text was stumped
