Factory Writing

By John-Wayne · Jun 12, 2018 · ·
  1. So as I spend more time on WF, I am starting to learn about a concept that was pretty foreign to me, a concept that i'm calling Factory Writing.

I read an analogy on another forum that spurred this one. Also a certain thread sparked this as well.

Anyways,, as I have mentioned about a million fucking times on this site, I do not have any formal writing, storytelling, what ever training. Rules for Writing is an oxymoron. Beyond basic grammar and sentence structure, most I learned through reading and adaptation of people's work I enjoyed to fit my own style.

To me personally, writing is suppose to be freeform, it's why I do it, why I enjoy it. Writing is not a job to me, it's not even a hobby, it's something I do because it's what I do. Being a Pharmacy Technician is a job, and I like my job but I do that for a paycheck.

I look on Amazon and a lot of the shit I see all looks the same to me, I've already learned that 5 star reviews are a very dubious thing. and I find 3 stars to be more accurate, with 2 and 4 being the extremes. 1 stars are shitkickers and 5 stars are asskissers.

But you go to one author's profile, no one from this site, and all their book covers are the same with slight variation, the basic principle of their stories are the same.

Now this isn't to say that my stories don't all have similarity or over arching theme. with War being a common thing, either used as a tool or avoided. But my stories do vary and follow different MCs some going through similar trials some going through different ones.

My current WIP involves Kristol, who must learn to control her temper and impulsive nature, and becomes an accidental chosen one through a series of events, and a meddlesome catperson. and rises to become the leader of her people and prefect her recipe for rabbit stew.

My back burner one, or my Magnus O pious as they say, is about a King who suffers from Schizophrenia ( a lit case of it) and him and those around him, learn how to managed it or at least keep himself. Thankfully he has a dog who saved him from killing himself.

and according to an indvidual on a certain thread, Passion doesn't get you published. so I should be thankful, being published is not my goal... it's a bonus to me.

Well, now that self-publishing is easier than ever, there's no need for a middle-man to impede a creative professional and his desire to put himself in the marketplace.

And that may be the wisest path since it doesn't involve losing half a book to an editor's own preferences, or risking some kind of political bias on the part of a big publisher. Also, since it's self-driven, it's highly controllable and all profits go to one person: the author.

Of course I'm not saying it's easy, but I think some good self-marketing and genuine talent/skill are what's needed to be successful as a novelist (nowadays especially). And I'm grateful to live in an era where the middlemen are coming apart as something like the Internet disarms the gatekeepers and let's the good and honest proceed unimpeded while the bad and dishonest are (usually, not saying there aren't mistakes) soundly shunned.

Having said that, I noticed your concepts are awfully strange lol. The one with a heroine named Kristol sounds like it involves a fairly crazy lady with more responsibility than she ought to have lol. I don't think Kristol's a good name, sounds like a hooker's name, however I'm curious where you're going with it since it could be pretty good (at least as far as my taste buds are concerned).

A King with schizophrenia? Well, IRL, I can tell you exactly how that ends: with him in an asylum with his country governed by a regency until, at least, his son comes of age. Kings had far less power than we give them credit for in modern media. If anything, secular republican leaders have far more power over their masses-especially since the centralization of martial power and especially in countries where citizens are legally disarmed at the behest of their elected officials.

    1. Indeed, and we see a lot of unique (Not to be confused with Original) works out there, some awful some great.

    2. Agreed, plus you maintain ownership of your intellectual properties, your stories an characters are yours. With Big Pub, you are basically writing for someone else. Sure the money maybe better. But, still I prefer keeping my I.P. And yes, outside of Taxes and whom ever you use taking a small percentage, the profit pretty much just goes to you.

    3. Naturally, it takes work to do things on your own, something I maybe doing pretty soon myself. :p . I like the idea of the internet disarming the gate keepers, indeed, as I said it gives us such invaluable works, good or bad, they now are there to enjoy.

    4. I'm bad at summarizing, so those might have been well written.
    a. For Kristol, that was a bad description. she doesn't constantly rage nor get angry easy, it's very situational. Also, I find typecasting (for lack of better word) names is a bit silly and limits creativity. Also that is a matter of perception, being a Tech, I have meant plenty of people name Crystal (Or what ever variation of the name), one of them a child... so.... Yeah. I happen to like the name and get annoyed at the implications that I can't use a name because of A. or C. and I doubt the parents of these young ladies was thinking prostitution was in their daughter's future.
    b. Well, thankfully this is fantasy. Also King Richard has a very light case of it, which is very manageable to a point where even he mocks is illusions attire, however it does cause some trouble for him later.
    c. Well it's a good thing I created by own world for my stories, so I can make the rules for it... The people in the majority of my books are not from this planet. though Earth does get visited by them in later books. Plus there is a lot of world building that is being left out of that summary, as I said I am very bad at summaries.
