Retirement. Revenge of the nerd.

  1. I am retired, but my Linked in account still sends me e-mail notices. Mostly it is from some online recruiting bot, that throws up numbers, matches me to a job, then sends me an e-mail link to a recruiter, this time in Austin TX. She has a perfect opportunity for me, close by in Newark CA. I know about where it is, so I sent the following.

    >No thanks. Look at a map. Just because it is in California does not make it close.<

Then I pulled out my favorite digital globe, took some measurements, then wrote this.

    >My map tells me that it is the same distance from my home to Newark as it is from Austin to Baton Rouge. I've done that drive at least twenty times. Family, and of course, San Francisco and the North Coast to the Redwoods. I am much closer to San Diego. Mexico is closer to me than L.A. I have a lot of family on both sides. I am a retired old curmudgeon who sometimes gets annoyed by corporate recruiters to whom I am but a blip in a stream of data. I see this as an opportunity to educate someone. In the case of on-line recruiters, it is often about Geography. It has become a hobby and an obsession. We are in the grips of those that do not care about geography, or history. We have to work on that.<

I didn’t send it. It has a better chance of being read here.
