Things that you can’t have just one of…

  1. Things that you can’t have just one of…

Top of everyone’s list is chips (crisps in the UK). That intoxicating mixture of fats and carbs gets me every time. I’m a kettle-chip lover, salt and vinegar. Not everyone likes the vinegar chips, but they are my favourite. And of course chocolate. I got a good supply of Lindt Lindor chocolates for Christmas. Can’t eat just one. Maybe some people can, but I bet it takes will power.

Cups of coffee. Gotta have three or four every morning. Recent research says this is true for 87% of coffee drinkers. Okay, I just made that statistic up. But I bet most coffee drinkers cannot stop at one cup.

Books. Do you remember reading your first book? Was there any way in hell you were going to stop there? And now, the reading high has you hooked. Reading is one of those more, more, more, endeavours.

Opinions. Gimme a topic, I’ll tell you what I think. From specific to general, or general to specific, makes no never-mind. I think, therefore I am.

Shoes. Normally, two are needed. And if you are like me, this also applies to pairs of shoes. My husband had maybe four pairs (Crocs, runners, dress brown, dress black) and I have about 40 pairs.

Underwear. No explanation needed. I hope.

Dollars. What can you buy for a dollar? Not much. You need lots and lots of dollars to live. Living costs money.

Goals. Long-term, short-term, personal, public, and just-for-fun. Goals are what keep us going.

Raindrops. A single raindrop would be a lonely thing! And you turn your face up to the sky, and every ping is like a spark of excitement on your skin. Thank goodness for the rain.

Fish in a tank. Well, you could, but that’s pretty cruel.

To all you lovely souls reading this, please add to the list!

You're forgetting music! There's truly nothing like it out there. I listen mostly to non-lyrical music because I love the way the sounds of instruments intertwine with each other to form melody. Each composer has a unique style, and so, just one musical track would be cruel.

And I'm of the belief that music combined with story is truly the pinnacle of enjoyment.

Keys are another. You need many keys on your keyboard to type out a story. I love mechanical keys instead of membrane based ones. My keyboard is a Dell AT101W from 1997 and has ALPS switches. Makes a lovely sound when I type.

I guess for those who write stories in notebooks and paper, it would be pens instead. You never have just one pen. I have a couple in my desk. They're useful for all sorts of writing though, like filling out forms or just plain old notes.

Good mentions! And keyboard keys put me in mind of the alphabet - we need more than one letter to compose words and sentences and paragraphs!

More of a Cherry MX Blue man myself, but I can appreciate the retro hardware.

Damn crisps need to be outlawed or something. If I have a problem, it's those. For me, salt and vinegar are tied with dill pickle, but sometimes I'm patriotic and go for an all-dressed or ketchup.

To add to the list, pillows. I like two pillows for sleeping, really prop my head up, and then sofa and chair pillows are nice too.

My dream keyboard is an IBM Model M with the Buckling Spring switches. But those things... they are very pricey now.

Ruffles all-dressed are my second favourite. I can eat a bag of those!

To add to the list - can't have just one mood. Our moods ride a wave, peaking and dipping, cresting and troughing, and everyone has their own amplitude.

I would second music. I've been performing music - mostly classical, but also jazz and Renaissance music - for over 20 years. Beethoven, Mozart, Rossini, Mendelssohn, Handel, Verdi, and 20th-century composers too. You name the composer, I've performed something by him/her.

Cups of coffee? Maybe, but I prefer tea or hot chocolate. Coffee gives me the shakes, and I don't like the bitter aftertaste. I prefer the sweetness and the slightly tangy, slightly citrus-y taste of Earl Gray or Lady Gray. Ahh.

I would also agree with chips or chocolate.

As for something to add - audiobooks! Is anyone else addicted to these things? I've been listening to audiobooks since the early 90s, back when they were on audio-cassette. Then they were on CD. Now they're streaming. Can't get enough of that delicious audio stuff, especially when the narrator is good. (I created a few short audio snippets myself, including a dramatic reading of Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart", and famous speeches like Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Patrick Henry's famous "Liberty or Death!" speech, etc.) I also created videos to go with them.

As for underwear ... oh, geez. Is there anyone out there who doesn't need at least half-a-dozen (or a dozen) pairs? Sheesh.

I could never get into audiobooks. I need to see the letters on the page, the only audiobook I ever listened to was A Game of Thrones.
