I am continuing to go back through the "Wandering inn" Series by Pirateaba. This series is a fascinating case study in world building. Since the genre is fantasy, the author has multiple races to deal with. There is a detailed profile for each race, Drakes, Gnolls, Goblins, Antinium, Humans which are the main races on the main continent in the story. Each race is detailed in culture and politics. Things are gradually revealed using an ignorant character, learning about the world. The culture clashes, provide part of the drama, and the ignorance of the MC stumbling over cultural issues. I find myself continually comparing my own world building to what the author has done in this series, and find myself lacking. I examine the series to try to tease out more lessons on world building.
For example:
The drakes are supposed to be descended from Dragons, so tend to be a bit prickly, and a tendency towards greed, and being extremely prideful.
The Gnolls are clanish, with keen hearing and sense of smell.
The Antinium, ants, are more of a hive mind, controlled by a Queen. The race is hated by most other races, and have their own internal politics between the various hives. The main hive in the story is struggling with individuality among its members.
The Goblins, are viewed as pests. They are not civilized, or very intelligent, but their primary motivation is survival. A point is made during the story, that they are living so close to the edge of survival that they are forced t eat their own dead at times.
I have tried to avoid being to specific to avoid spoiling things for any who decide to pick up this series. While giving enough details to show my point. I think those in the community can see the potential for story conflict in the world building. Combine that with an idealistic MC from a different world, and the possibilities increase exponentially.
