I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and worked in the field for several years before deciding I wanted a change. At that point, I transitioned into a career in the IT field and worked with one company for almost thirteen years before being laid-off. Now I'm out looking for work, which feels strange.
I've always liked stories and the power they have to take you on a mental-vacation. I recall the joy of writing way back in fourth grade when we had an assignment to write a story about a strange-looking vegetable that our teacher had brought in. Mine was entitled “The Martian Hot Dog,” and I remember the teacher complimenting me on it. From there, I would write on-and-off for the next thirty-some years, never anything longer than a short-story, and most of it falling into the flash fiction category. There were scattered compliments during this time, but I mostly kept my writing to myself and ignored any encouragements to take it further. Then a couple of years ago, I decided to at least make an attempt to become a better writer and I joined a couple of writing sites, this one included.
Since then, I believe my writing has improved. I even accomplished a goal and proved to myself that I could write a novel-length piece, albeit a short one, during the 2008 NaNoWriMo. The book has been cleaned up some, but it still needs some serious revision. And it's been in that state for over a year now.
In other words, I need to get off my fat-butt and do something.
