This is typically done to prevent spamming. Rather than posting obvious spam from the start, spammers will sometimes post what appear to be legitimate messages and then come back some time later and edit those messages to put in their spam. It's a lot harder for the systems to catch, apparently, so a lot of forums put time limits on editing so that spammers can't put a bunch of posts out there and then come back and edit them all into spam.
Funny you mention this. Yesterday I whacked just such a spammer. The posted replies within existing threads were perfectly germane and on topic, so clearly a real human at the keyboard, but then a SPAM link.
Thanks, guys. I might try Chrome. However, I am also going to buy a new Mac! It's not just this site. I keep getting notices from eBay saying 'your browser is out of date,' and of course I can't upgrade it any further. Time to bite the bullet... Nope - Just checked out Chrome. Has to be Mac OSX.6 or later. Mine is OSX. 5.8. Sigh...
I can't answer for Macs as I've never used one, but FF 23 runs OK even on my weaker PC and laptop, though they are on Win7. I'm not using internet on my old XP machines but they have different non-internet uses so that's not an issue, and my little servers are on Linux (ClearOS) so they're out of the picture. (Totally OT: regarding Apple, I find myself this very day in the curious position of seriously considering an Apple product (iPhone) for the first time in my life, due to the failings of BB and MS to properly support encrypted emails on their smartphones without enterprise or exchange server support. Android was a candidate as there is an app for S/MIME emails, but I'm not confident of its CalDav/CardDav support which I also need. The iPhone appears to be getting close to supporting the features I want in a smartphone, if the next one has a 128GB memory, as is currently rumoured.)
Can I still complain about the edit window? Ok, I understand, I should become a better proofreader or wait two hours before I post so that my stupid eyes catch all the SpaG errors (I'm actually beginning to wonder if it's possible to become dyslexic), but it was nice when the window was longer... Also, where can I find information about this follow function? What does it do? Should I be worried if a mod starts following me? Is it a subtle warning that I've been a bad girl and am watched?
You can follow people too, you know. There's a "News Feed" in your profile that's supposed to collect information on the latest activities of people you follow. They probably just decided you're interesting enough. I haven't found any description of the functions, though.
Yeah, I seem to be following people I haven't decided to follow it's cool though, they are interesting people, but I never realized I had activated such a thingy.
I didn't know what the follow function was until about the day before yesterday. I think it's a great feature - I can check my "news feed" and read new posts from people I'm following! I started getting worried too, when I saw that some people were following me. It makes me feel a little like I'm on stage and I have to put on a good show so that I don't disappoint them. And I have a serious case of stage fright ... Don't worry that I'm following you, KaTrian - it just means I like reading your posts.
i'm still not seeing a checkmark on many threads where i've already posted, which is a major pain... any way to fix that, daniel?
For some reason the site randomly logs me out every so often. I even checked the box that says "Keep me logged in," but that didn't work. Anyone else having this problem?
I think the people you follow are just the people who you were "friends" with on the old platform. I never really understood the friend function. It didn't really seem to do anything other than have their posts show up on your profile.
Hey Daniel, some debugging info; an analysis of the forum turns out a couple errors: Refused to load the script 'http://1.2.3.4/bmi-int-js/bmi.jsversion=1350564613' because it violates the following Content Security Policy directive: "script-src https://*.facebook.com http://*.facebook.com https://*.fbcdn.net http://*.fbcdn.net *.facebook.net *.google-analytics.com *.virtualearth.net *.google.com 127.0.0.1:* *.spotilocal.com:* chrome-extension://lifbcibllhkdhoafpjfnlhfpfgnpldfl 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval' https://*.akamaihd.net http://*.akamaihd.net *.atlassolutions.com". GET https://www.writingforums.org/js/jquery/jquery-1.10.1.min.map 404 (Not Found) The first one is just Chrome being picky...however the second one could be causing some issues, unless you've already implemented a work around or custom JQUERY.
Really? I'm not sure. I never was clear on what "friends" were on the old platform - it didn't seem to have a function. The "follow" here does have a function - one that I'm actually aware of! (I'm terrible at exploring software. It always seems to have fifty times as many features as I actually use, and I never bother learning what they all are.)
Well, the function may not be the same, but in the migration from the old platform, my guess is that it was the software's best guess to translate "friends" into people you follow. Although, now that I think about it, there seem to be two people I follow (without having done anything) but a dozen or so people who follow me. Those people were people who were "friends" before. I have not done anything to follow anyone
Previous platform's friends list allowed you to limit access of certain of your items to people on that list (and moderators)
This is not a huge problem, but it's annoying. All the other text changes work for me, but I can't get colour changes to happen any more. Maybe this problem will also disappear once I get my new Mac, and my text-entering speed picks up from 5 wpm...
