Wow, I looked it up to after seeing your post. Sure does look amazing! I'm glad you are all doing so well. I'm reading this thread trying to cheer myself up.
Today I had a nice day because I drove to Portland (Maine) and walked around the city and ate lunch there. Portland is such a pretty city, and in my opinion, the city is not too big or small. It's a small city, but there is a lot there, as it's bigger than the other Maine cities. It's great having a city that I like that's only an hour away from where I live.
Today I sat on the side of a stony mountain under a cloudless sky and listened to the songs of the wind.
Went to a poetry slam at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe tonight. That place and the performers are incredible. If there's any NYC people here, I highly suggest you check em out.
Well, started my new life as a trainee college teacher. Moved in this week: flat is in a nice part of town, the people are friendly, everything I need isn't too far away, and I now know where the city gym is. Beer is cheap in this city, and there is a good book shop just half an hour's walk from my front door. Something tells me I'm going to like it here.
Some years ago, when I was young, My family and I went to LA to see the Lion King Musical live and I was amazed. I've wanted to see it again ever since. (My memory is now a little tainted because I found out that the only reason my mom was the only one of us who did NOT go to the show was NOT because she had work, as I thought then. No one wanted to help her buy a ticket...) Aside from the bad memory, I am fortunate enough to be able to see the play again this Oct. ASU is hosting it here in the Gammage and as a student resident, I got a discounted price and can now see the show for $14. If my family were still out, I would have ordered us all tickets. Ah well, now I just have to find a friend who's going on the same night ha ha!
I just returned home from several days in Acadia National Park in Maine. I took hundreds of photos, ate plenty of great seafood, and am blissfully exhausted and stiff from hiking and climbing mountain trails.
I got good news yesterday. It's still sinking in, but one of my essays is featured as a notable essay in the most recent Best American Essays anthology. I'm not sure what to do but I think it's going to involve wine this weekend and maybe some drunken dancing. Updates to follow.
It's a personal essay (yay, nonfiction) about a childhood experience. Short summation is that in involves guns, animals, and violence. I grew up on a ranch. Rural communities are rapidly shrinking in the US so my childhood is something of an oddity in this day and age.
My son came in as a runner up in a flash poetry contest. They don't have the winners posted yet but they sent him an email. Sherman Alexie: FallsApart Poetry Contest #1
Had a fun evening yesterday. T and I threw a joint birthday party and friends came over. Okay, so, beer tastes better when it's drunk from an Iron Maiden & Motörhead bottles and fizzy red wine is suprisingly tasty. Got just a teeny bit tipsy, which was nice (I can't drink to deep drunkendom anymore, and I don't really want to either). My big brother came over as well and gave me awesome books for my b-day (one of them Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, our family has a bit of a tradition in competetive running) and all in all we had a blast
Starting my second year of my Creative Writing degree on Monday. Two of the three modules for this semester look good: The Business of Writing (publishing, TV writing, etc.) and Writing Poetry, which I'm really looking forward to! I'm sure it will broaden my horizons, as I don't read much poetry anyway, and I'd love to be able to write a more rhythmic poem!
Really? Seriously? You mixed a Vin Rouge with a pop? You'd be shot in France for High Treason - Or Madame Guillotine would await your head at Le Place de La Revolution! Happy Birthday guys!
Those evil, evil Italians. This is the wine: Lambrusco grasparossa di castelvetro I had never tasted wine like that before and I'd lie if I said it didn't taste good -- and I did feel rather sullied and unusual afterwards. But yeah, thanks, it's fun to have birthdays only a few days apart
I've heard of people mixing soda with whisky, but I've never heard of soda and wine. I may have to try it out.
