    What compells you to write?

Demands of at least 1/3 of 7,000,000,000 on the planet.

    Why do you write?

It has been drilled into my head by schools, professional and legal paradigms that I must or be outcast as illiterate, which would mean I'd have to flip burgers or bounce basketballs for a living, either of which is a fate worse than death. As of the growing populace of visual artists, I, like many other artists are turning to writing novels with the idea that illustrating them puts me in a top notch area of the market.

What makes you write what you write?

As well as a professional creator, I'm a professional theoretical scientist and credibility demands that I produce a good share of non-fiction. The fiction is a means of communicating idioms to the non-scientist.

What Made you decide you liked to write?

I don't know that I really like it. What I like is an effective means to communicate.

    What Do You Write?

    Whatever suits the contemporary need.

    What compells you to write?

    Compels*, I think :)
Anyway, I guess what compels me to write is the beauty of reading, mostly. The way words can move you in their own peculiar way simply by the order of which they are structured, to me a greatly written poem, or prose, or novel, can be infinitely more entertaining than the most beautiful piece of painted or picturesque art. Note, though, that I'm not saying that I do not appreciate the latter, I just find word-art marginally more entertaining. And in that sense I find myself compelled to exercise the same trade of art in the hopes of one day being appreciated in the way I appreciate the things I read.
    - And, because it's fun.

    Why do you write?

Well, I reckon I actually answered this above there, you know, up above this paragraph, somewhere closer to the top of my post. But I guess I can also say that I write because writing, probably along the same lines as painting, or music, or sculpting, or anything considered art, is a perfect way of dreaming yourself away from reality to relieve yourself of all burdens and frustrations in day-to-day life.

What makes you write what you write?

To answer this I'd have to define what I write, which, at my current stage in the process of becoming accustomed to writing, is rather difficult. But I guess I mostly write fantasy and science fiction oriented stories. And the main reason to that is because creating alternate realities is just another way of dreaming yourself away from life. But even more so, creating alternate realities makes you able to play God with your own little personal world(s), you get to create all the intrigues of life in the most preferred way you can think of yourself. I guess that is why I write what I write.

What Made you decide you liked to write?

Reading, mostly. And then, later, the discovery of the actual fun part about producing words for others to read.

    What Do You Write?

Yet to be (mostly) undefined, I write fantasy, sci-fi, poems, prose...
Well, not so much non-fiction, so I guess the most general and narrow answer would be "fiction."

    What compels you to write?
I'm not sure how to answer this except with the illogical compulsion to tell stories, learn new things and exercise my imagination.

    Why do you write?
I write because I want to influence the lives of others for good through the fiction genre.

What makes you write what you write?
I'm fascinated with what I'm able to do with fiction and the ideas I am able to convey. I love world building and solving problems.

What made you decide you liked to write?
When I was about 8 or 9, I wrote my first story and ever since then, I've been fascinated with reading and writing fantasy and science fiction. When I was 16, I realized that I literally got a high every time I sat down to write a story. It was then that I decided I wanted to be a writer for a living.

    What Do You Write?
I write fantasy and science fiction stories.

What makes you write what you write?

The fact that there are people out there looking for something to read.

What Made you decide you liked to write?

Game forums. I've always liked to write guides and reviews for various games.

    What Do You Write?

    Novels, reviews, and guides.

    1. When I get a great idea, I can't let it pass by. Heck, even if I have a crazy dream it becomes the root of a story!

    2. Because I can only live one life on this planet, but when I create a character and I create their story, it feels like I'm living another life.

    3. Pretty much same as above!

    4. I've been doing it since I was younger, and every time I write it makes me feel so good, like I can do anything.

    5. Mainly novels that are true to life, usually stemming from a personal experience

    What compels you to write?
Reading really inspires me. Writing opens a new path in any story.

    Why do you write?
So I can experience worlds I would otherwise be unable to live. I entertain myself with words.

What makes you write what you write?
Enjoyment of seeing imagined words come to life. I don't want to do it as a job, but I want to invite others into my writing so they can see and feel exactly as I do.

What made you decide you liked to write?
I didn't decide that I liked to write. It came naturally.

    What Do You Write?
Mostly fiction and prophecies, or essays when I have to. But I'm currently pushing myself to read and write more non-fictitious stories during my leisure. Or if I write fiction, I try writing something new and challenging - something meaningful.

I have always found writing pleasurable.
It allows me to explore different relationships, characters and adventures on paper.
Thus allowing me to express myself, without leaving my comfort zone.
Writing is a hobby for me in which I believe presents me with the opportunity to dive into my creative side and explore different ways of thinking, speaking and expressing.

    1. What compels you to write?
TV and movies! :D I always wanted to design a character and dream that one day people will love my story and turned into a movie :)

    2. Why do you write?
I write to express myself and because I love it.

    3. What makes you write what you write?
A blank paper and some stories just need to be finished or extend :D

    4. What made you decide you liked to write?

Tbh, my friends are the ones who taught me that I should write with whatever I'm feeling because it will make me feel better, this is why I thought maybe I'm good at creative writing but I'm still learning then I start to take writing seriously in high school.

    5. What Do You Write?
    I write a journal and poetries :D

    What compels you to write?
Probably the need of catharsis by the means of living vicariously through the character(s). It's like vomiting. I stand by my Olivetti and there's this word salad over there after 3 hours or so, something that's part of me that I purge.

Why do you write? For mine and other people's enjoyment. I don't take much pride in using the ancient techniques of stream of consciousness or cut-up writing, but somehow, that's the way that things work for me. And in some way it's sort of a therapy for myself. It's all there in the deepest recesses of my mind and it needs to be let out, and as such, I release it.

What makes you write what you write? Dreams.

What Made you decide you liked to write? I don't know. I'm 34 now, and I write since I was a boy.

What Do You Write? Novels, poetry, short stories, haikus.

    What compels you to write?
Because I enjoy telling stories. My stories. Seeing them published and sold is just icing on the cake.

What makes you write what you write?
I can see, hear, and feel the stories in my mind, stories that no one else is telling.

What made you decide you liked to write?
It is something I've always enjoyed, even when I wrote just for myself.

    What Do You Write?
    Novels of various genres. Exclusively.

I think this is such an important question... And isn't it interesting how often we don't answer it, even if we know, deep down, that we want to be writers?
I write everything from fiction to magazine articles, blogs, newspaper features, emails and websites, but it's a rare treat to be asked what compels me to write... The answer? I can't imagine doing anything else with my days.
    Can you?

    What compels you to write?
I've been told that I am a good writer since middle school, and to be brutally honest, I am compelled to write as a way to say "I can write as good/better than that @$%! I just read."

    Why do you write?

To tell a story and elicit a reaction from my audience.

What makes you write what you write?

I have not really defined "my" writing yet. I have a definite style, but no genre that I am married to.

What Made you decide you liked to write?

Early and continued reaction to what I have written as well as constructive criticism I have received.

    What Do You Write?

Almost exclusively short fiction and entertainment (live music, movies, CDs) reviews. My first go at a novel is in the works.

What compels you to write? The compulsion itself.

    Why do you write?
Sometimes I can't help but relay what I've felt and seen and thought into written words.

What makes you write what you write?
I don't know just yet. Maybe it's what I feel best suits what I feel when I write.

What made you decide you liked to write?
I never came to this conclusion.

    What do you write?
Fantasy, fiction short stories, flash fiction, poetry.

    1. A need to express myself in a way that can be understood by many.

    2. I want to share my views and feelings with as many people as possible.

    3. Love of the future and what it may bring to our lives. A rare perception of what can come. Impossible yet possible. I love to play on the current problems in society and show moral quandaries.

    4. Ive loved to write since I was middle school. It is one of the only ways I know I can fully express myself with little misunderstanding. I want my ideas to effect those who read them in positive ways.

    5. Sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, psychology, mystery, anything else I find interesting.

What compels you to write? Mental well being, and a belief that my stories have to be told.
Why do you write? I have to. It helps me filter the world and the way I understand it. I stopped writing for a while but I lost track of who I was and became miserable, tired and a shadow.
What makes you write what you write? The stitching is sometimes unravelled, or non-existent, where I think it should be and I like to put the story back together. Most often I write from skewed perceptions.
What made you decide you liked to write? I enjoy it and I love words. People seem to understand me better when I write.
What do you write? Mostly fiction (varied genres), some poetry, teeny bits of non-fiction, and rants.

WOW! POWERFUL THE HERE! I so wanted to answer to this because this is quite 'the ' question isn't it. I guess people write for all different types of reasons, and viewing some replies on here its clear to see that. I think it takes strength, determination, and passion to write - for anyone. As for myself, what I've always aimed for in my writing is to make people actually feel and believe. Add colour to a blank page. I did do a short writing course which I completed - just about!-it didn't really focus on MY writing and was all about how to write as in write about this or so many words about that - not things that floated my boat really, but we did get to submit 1 or 2 pieces ourselves which was good - but I was told that I was best at my 'dark' writing. I know what is meant by this and I feel the same too, and am happy with this. It's what I've accepted and I love what I write, as long as I can get in there and make the reader feel. I often like yo write in 1st person because I can be more descriptive and be inside the characters head - I am the character, and that works well for me. But I write because every since I was very young I wanted yo be a writer. I had my dreams shattered at one point but I built them back up again, but eventually, the harsh reality of life kicked in and I popped out 3 gorgeous children, ended up a single mum, and now I'm back to my dream, with plenty of free time too. I have the power to express my feeling and create work of passion through my own determination. I write because it's what I've always wanted to do. I write because it's what I want to do. I write because I love it. And I write in the hope that someday soon some readers will love it too :)

    1. What compels you to write? - an idea gets under my skin like an itch that must be scratched out - with pen.

    2. Why do you write? - First it was to have my say without interruption. ( In my house getting a word in edgewise was hard ) Now, it's to figure out what I have to say.

    3. What makes you write what you write? - Like anyone else, I guess I imagine something and give it my own slant so no matter how tired the subject, idea or plot, it's still my own vision.

    4. What Made you decide you liked to write?
    - I heard a woman writer talk to our class in grade 3. She was very poised and confident. I liked that. I didn't care much for her story but I loved the fact that she liked it - she had confidence in herself and her work. Later, I got addicted to the surreal reality writing creates. One foot in reality, another in the dreamworlds of your creation.

    5. What Do You Write? - anything that catches my fancy. But its usually offbeat.

    The characters in my head.
Because I have to - if I didn't, my mind would explode.
    I have no idea!
Having such a deep feeling and affection for my characters, including the bad ones.
Whatever comes into my mind. And then some!

A desire to flesh out worlds and stories that live in my mind.

Probably reading the writings of other that inspires me to do the same.

What Made you decide you liked to write?

I was bad at drawing and turns out I was pretty good at writing, so yea.

    What Do You Write?

    What compels you to write?
The thought that just one person might find my writing interesting.

    Why do you write?
Because it's been the main form of indirect human communication for over five thousand years. It was there as the first IHC and will be there as the last. If all the electronics die, the books will survive.

What makes you write what you write?
Human desire. As well as; dreams, characters, worlds and thoughts that wont leave me alone unless I transfer them from my head to a paper.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
I neither like nor dislike writing, I see it as the only viable source of transmitting my story. But I have to admit, I do find myself smiling from time to time when I have a good writing run.

    What do you write?
I'm working on a large-scale project with some smaller ones surrounding it for practice and experience.

    What compels you to write?
I am compelled to write because I like it, and because it is important to write about something when you are in an academe.

    Why do you write?
Because I am primarily an essayist, I write because I like to share my ideas.

What makes you write what you write?
I write about certain topics in politics and philosophy because these subjects are part of my academic specialization.

What Made you decide you liked to write?
My desire to be a writer.

I didn't start out knowing I liked to write. I started out as just a little girl who liked to rid, tell fibs and weird stories to friends and families. Being artistic wasn't something that very encouraged in my family especially when I got older. So if I had to pinpoint what it is that drives me it would be that. There are people who think I'm wasting my time and that I need to be doing something else. Something that'll make me more money faster. They're wrong. I love telling stories and I know I'm good at telling them because those same people routinely fall for the obviously fake stories I come up with describing my weekend. ;)

What do I write? I write fiction. I've never been a very good poet and non-fiction? Well...I don't like real life. lol The reason why I write fiction is the same reason I read it. It's an escape. The difference is I'M the one doing the creating.
