No, I have never understood people queueing for a signature/ autograph. I think my brain just works differently in this regard- I would rather buy the unsigned version and not wait.

Tend to agree with Chinspinner--never have been too enamored with the idea of standing in line to kiss the ego of some literary hero. But I did do it about 25 years ago to get Tom Robbins to sign "Still Life With Woodpecker" as a gift for my brother. Now Robbins is in his 80's and recently released what is expected to be his last book. I know my brother still has the book (kinda wish I did). And still love his debut, "Another Roadside Attraction." The man could tell a story.

I've been collecting Bernard Cornwell's books from The Saxon Series as signed first editions. Then the BBC decided to make a television show based off of them, and while they may one day possibly be worth more than I paid, I don't know if I will be able to part them haha.

Life of Mammals (in Icelandic) signed by Sir David Attenborough, I got it for christmas when I was 8, Sir Attenborough was in Iceland for a brief period and my mum called the publishers and got a signed one for me.

It might sound odd but his work has had a tremendous impact on my creative writings. It´s easy to find inspiration in nature and my knowledge of evolution in nature and society is a huge aid in creating my fantasy world.

Most of the signed editions I have were bought at used book stores or rummage sales. I think most lesser know authors love signing their books.

I met Katherine Paterson once at a book festival and got my copy of Bridge to Terabithia autographed. Also, I have a few signed picture books from various children's authors, and I recently bought the book Bound by Blood by P.L. Jones and later found out that it was a signed copy.

Edit: Also, I met Tim Federle two years in a row at a theatre festival, and he autographed his books Better Nate than Ever and Five, Six, Seven, Nate for me. The second year I also met Henry Hodges, who autographed his book, How to Act Like a Kid. Mary Pope Osborne was also there that year, signing copies of one of her Magic Tree House books that had just been adapted into a musical, but, unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to meet her.

I have a signed copy of Orson Scott Card's Speaker for the Dead, which I got from a book signing at a local convention. I also have a few others as well:
    • Signed copy of Roy Spencer's Climate Confusion. I met him when working on a team project in highschool, and got a signed copy of his book.
    • Signed copy of John Allison's The Financial Crisis and the Free Market Cure. I met him at an event at my university.
    • A signed copy of one of my old history professor's books, which is a book that covers the history of the city I live in. Figured I'd take the opportunity to buy his book and get him to sign it since he'd just released it, although he didn't assign it as a textbook or anything.
    • I own a few signed books by David Weber and I think Jerry Pournelle (or Niven, don't remember for sure). These aren't personalized, as I picked them up from a stand at a convention that was selling signed books.
Also have a signed copy of Well of Ascension on order, although haven't received it yet.
