I want to like it, but my integrity as a literate person forbids me.

    I'm the same way.

To be honest, I don't think I've really seen it—I was 6 when it played, and while my parents did allow me to watch inappropriate films for my age, my mom bonded with me over classical film adaptations (& obscure foreign films). I don't think baby Leo appealed to her, because I don't remember seeing it.

I do remember my older sister gushing over seeing it with a friend, 'cause she had a crazy crush on Leo

It also might be because Romeo & Juliet isn't our go to Shakespeare work—we had a heavy focus on Macbeth, Hamlet, Richard III, with Much Ado About Nothing thrown in for good measure. Othello's were regrettably scarce.

I think Romeo & Juliet was so hyped & built up as the epitome of romance, that neither of us were overly keen to watch it at any rate.

The only R&J film I can recall seeing (aside from Warm Bodies) was the really recent one from 2013—the one where everyone LOST THEIR MINDS that the creators had the AUDACITY to add lines to Shakespeare

I don't worship at the cult of Shakespeare, so I didn't feel the affront of the inherent heresy. I mean, I like the guy, but I'm not gonna set myself ablaze in protest to the desecration of his legacy.

But I definitely support that Romeo & Juliet is about stupid young people making poor life choices.

I mean, Juliet is only just 14 and he's her first crush.

And I distinctly recall Romeo pining just hours before meeting Jules for his absolute one true love Rosaline whom he can't possibly live without.

So I can get behind a film that depicts the absurdity of it all. I should probably give it a watch.

Also, I think that's what I loved about the first Hollow Crown series. Even though they straight up delivered Shakespeare's lines, they all performed it as if it were just modern English with no pomp or pretense.

My favourite performance of all was Simon Russell Beale as Falstaff. He was gross, vulgar, amusing, pathetic, and very real. And he delivered his lines as though that's exactly how he talked with his boys at a pub on a Friday night. All the actors (Jeremy Irons, Tom Hiddleston, Joe Armstrong, etc) were great, but there was something above them all in Beale's performance to my mind.

It used to be that printed material had a high degree of accuracy because it cost money to make. Typos popped up here and there, but they were rare enough that one could safely internalize most material. Now there's no such barrier, and our minds are just baffled and don't know what to believe anymore, so we believe it all.

I hadn't heard of this series, will have to keep an eye out for it. In the early 2000s there was a Shakespeare Re-Told series and I remember particularly loving The Taming of the Shrew episode.

Sometimes I really, really, really miss the days when everyone was balls deep in their vampire romance WIP.

Nothing, but that's not really the point. ;) Vampire Romance writingforums.org was blissfully devoid of identity politics. Simpler times.

I am about halfway through a vamp novel from someone around here. It is not a
Romance, but it is quite interesting. Bit of an older one in the archives. Not really
sure how it will pan out though. :)

So yesterday, I don't know how or why, but I pulled up my Twilight parody I specifically wrote for my best friend
It was in the midst of the whole Twilight craze period, and my friend wanted to read it to see what all the fuss was about but also had absolutely no desire to read it—if it were about her and this one celebrity maybe. . . so I parodied the whole damn thing with her life & people she knew filling all necessary roles and sarcastically following Meyer's descriptions & plot
and read it out loud (or at least five chapters of it) to her again & our guy friend. It's been like ten years since I wrote it

    We were all crying

On the strength of this one clip I Netflixed the whole show (in Chicago) and it was delightful. :-D
