Question: How did you arrive at 700? Were you aiming for a certain year, or was 700 significant in some way, or did 700 or the year just have a nice ring to it? I always find it interesting how the author chose the time period.
I wanted to be far enough to be futuristic, and still be able to make the tech seem reasonably plausible. Also it sounds cooler to think of the 28th century, over Star Trek and the 24th century.
So you'll be learning the publishing angle of this magazine? Even better. I think any kind of insight into how these things work can be very valuable to a writer.
Finally got to use some of my World's lore in a convoluted, ridiculous and overall pretty cool attempt to break a siege and take a fortified city with minimal loss or harm coming to innocents. And my MC got some pretty cool shades in the process. and as I mentioned in another post they allow her to see in the dark and protect her eyes from direct sunlight, though her society is on the level of the Romans in tech (though a bit more advanced than the Romans). However, I need to make sure to cover my bases so this doesn't become an F you to my readers.
Back in August of last year (I think), I posted on the unhappy thread that I was struggling to find permanent employment. Well since then I've been in and out of temporary roles but have finally found something that I consider a career (at least for the time being - not keen on being part of the 9 to 5 rat race forever). Gosh, it felt so good when I got that phone call to say I was successful What that does mean is that I will have less time to read and write. However, I do plan on working around this. I have some interesting short story ideas which are in the process and can't wait to get these drafts out!
So I've been looking for a daily write for a while now, and after journaling my life fell through (for like the 20th time) I decided to make a fiction journal. I'm only a day in, but I feel more motivated to make up a life every day instead of recount my own.
Getting use to living sucks, and it seems to be happening earlier and earlier since we are living longer and longer 'round here. The www doesn't help either, takes the fucking wonder out of discovering stuff and cuts back on actually talking to people who are often more knowledgeable than most in understanding some shit that is not on-line, or at least not yet. Some kids I encounter who are in their 20's are showing signs of suicidal tendencies and admit that they feel that they have pretty well seen everything. No you haven't dingbat, take a walk with me and let's talk and question stuff you think you know. But, even with a strong will to wonder, it remains difficult for a teacher to compete with an internet connection and google earth. Fawk ! Definitely a "first world problem" that will inevitably spread. There are consequences to this immense and rapid progress which has been achieved in this latest age. A nervous and quite anxious/paranoid beginning to the 21st century. Enough, we already know all this. Anyway, the happy thought I wanted to express here is that even if we are likely to get use to waking up everyday and doing the do, there is a way to make it less of that "here we go again, not this shit again" feeling. I don't know if the 50+ gang here feels the same thing that I am trying to describe, but I suspect that the answer may be yes unless you managed to slip in under the gate and avoid the crunch of this controlling age. And as for the younger middle aged members, maybe this is happening to you folks as well, this "malaise" seems to be happening earlier for some than for others. Personally when I feel the weasels of time and routine closing in I give myself a small goal and bend myself in different ways to achieve it. It can be pretty stupid, but it keeps me alive, at least until next week or the next little while until I can conjure up something more significant that my old soul can become horny about. Here is my latest - a philosophical accountants wet dream in the form of an electro-mechanical computer and game. It is going right in the corner of my studio this Saturday, (young people are moving it for me, most can lift more than I can) which means that I will make it to next week ok, and maybe a long while after that once I figure out how this all works. Gonna have to talk to some old timers with stories about gambling machines from the mid 20th century. More here about these nutty electro-mechanical computers meant to do one thing - take your money, not your imagination - http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=3803& ... 422&zoom=1
I'll make sure to get something up in the workshop later No - not really. No expecting things in the workshop. There will be no Lemie things in the workshop. I swear.
I'm a Swede - I'm a pro at assembly! Just hope they haven't missed any parts. I juts hate it when they miss a screw
I don't need a key to wind Mrs. A up, I just leave the dirty dishes under the sofa (again), that keeps her wound for days.
Well... on to Chapter 11 of my WIP, . It's one of thee most important chapters and one of thee most boring chapters as well. . Mostly politics and circular logic which gives birth to the Empire... Yeah. But in seriousness, I hope my logic and that of the characters works well, if not... well, I hate to use this but I will if I have to... it's my world, my rules. . Though i'm doing my best to keep it fair, If I wanted a more realistic world I would have used earth and have everyone as Assholes. . Even my Alt-Earth for my Universe is different to the Real world. . with it branching at a more or less recent time period (sort of, 14h century) and the branch was caused by people from my world inadvertently changing Earth's history.
