Just finished re-reading PD James' A Taste for Death. I think she's one of the best mystery writers in terms of setting out the background and developing characters. More novel than detective story. For me anyway, she's almost as engrossing as Dickens -- I always hate for her story to end.
Yeah, have also read that series, it was pretty good overall. My latest read is Altered Carbon after watching the tv series. They did diverge somewhat, have to say, but the book is a good read.
Reading some H.G Wells... not for the story.. only for the patterns... one of the few benefits of hyperlexia.
Actually, Leviathan Wakes is the best of the bunch. As the series goes along the writing gets progressively sloppy, the plot ridiculously convoluted, favorite characters disappear for long spells and return too conveniently for my liking, and so far as I can tell... there's absolutely no narrative arc! Corey found a cash cow and is milking the poor dear for all she's worth.
That's a pity, I did think about trying the second book as I found the first to be pretty good. I like the tv series a lot too.
Ah well. I already gave up on the first book and the series will remain untouched by these hands for the rest of my days. On that note, I've heard the T.V series is a lot better than the books, which shocks me a bit as its usually the other way around.
True, the series is very good. I do remember the book being good too but that was some years ago. The series is worth a binge.
I'll have to give it a watch soon. Really wanted to like the books. At least Dune is pretty good, though kind of slow.
This may be new to many of our friends. Am currently reading an Indian great book called " the Gospel of Buddha". Its highly recommended for gaining new insights in life, as we always learn.
Being tired of re-reading familiar fare, I've finally cracked open my copy of Dracula. It's a translation, which is a shame, but it is kind of refreshing to read something in Norwegian for a change. I'm not sure what to think of it, since the story hasn't really kicked off yet. It seems pretty good, with a fair dose of that old-timey gothic charm.
IMO (when I read the original) it got boring after we left Johnathan in the castle. I plugged through more of it but when it went from 'ooooOOOOooo spooky' to 'actually nailing down what could/couldn't be done' it lost a lot of the tension. Never did actually finish it though.
Just finished Book Two if Echoes of the Fall trilogy by Adrian Tchaikovsky: The Bear and the Serpent. Not as magical as his Shadows of the Apt series, I'm thinking, though mayhaps I have to revise that after burning through the remaining 60% of the novel in a day? It's certainly refreshing and interesting to read a fantasy that's set in the Stone Age. This is, of course, limiting, but that's where the magic and shapeshifting come into play and that's where the author's brilliance really shines through.
Che’s Reminisces of the Cuban Revolution. I have to admit I’m starting to see what someone here said about it being the book that killed the romance of this man. He is a little too matter of fact when reporting on the execution of prisoners, deserters and informers.
I'm almost done with "The Outsider" by Stephen King. I'm completely torn between enjoying the book and being disappointed. Parts of it are really good and I'm pretty sure I've enjoyed reading the book, but other parts have made me sorely disappointed in Stephen King. All I want is a book reminiscent of his older writings. Is that too much to ask?
I once quit TV as an experiment because I felt it was a time-sink. The TV licensing letters were so persistent and threatening I haven't had a TV license since. That was almost 15 years ago. They've been knocking on my door here every couple of weeks. I told them I didn't want one and told them why. They knocked on again a few weeks ago and my gf spoke to them. They told her I'd been marked as 'uncooperative'. Can you imagine anyone else getting away with trying to sell a product or service with this much aggression ? Anyway, rant over. I'm reading Transit, the second in Rachel Cusk's Outline trilogy. It's very good
