I must confess i dont get the ' no comment' statement. A police program I am watching. One a one hand it is not comment and yet it there is a barrage of questions knowing there wont be any answers given. where is this going??

I confess to the latter statement being somewhat cheap because I usually know exactly what is going on when I make a decision. It's not specifically a criminal interview thing; it's used by public people when dealing with the press too. Especially when there is just an audio recording instead of a video, there is no actual proof that you refused to answer the question, or that you even understood what you were being asked. No comment is a way to indiciate that you are there and that you are giving no answer but in an entirely non-prejudicial way. The court can't hold your refusal to answer against you by law, but juries really don't like hearing "fuck you copper!" or "oh I couldn't possibly tell you that... *cackles*". A flat 'no comment' gives the least information possible while acknowleding that you understood the question. Put it in the same catergory as having to actually state "I cannot answer that question because the answer may incriminate me" in the US. It's a quirk of our legal system over here. However... I have a deeper theory about why you mostly see hardened criminals answering 'no comment' like that. Interogration is a pressure cooker and there is a whole lot of strategy involved. Getting into someones head is a genuine thing that depends on various factors. One of them is rhytmn (others include eye contact, contrasting styles, etc) and it does really matter. With someone who is being uncooperative just sitting and asking the same questions over and over in the same pattern is kinda like chinese water torture. Maybe if you murdered someone you wouldn't give it up after a few hours being yelled at, but if the cops had something minor on you and you were pretty pissed off about that, how many times could they ask you who did the big robbery before you just say 'fuck it' and give the others up? But by having something to say back gives you a way to get into your own rhythmn, and a way to break up the interogators. It becomes more of a battle of wills rather than a siege. Saying stuff in the interview gives you a sense of agency over what is happening, and reassures you in the knowledge that you haven't given anything away. It strengthens you to be a part of the process instead of letting it wash over you. So there's some of that. FYI - If you ever happened to be interogated then you want to not make eye contact, not listen, not acknowledge the interogators existance and stick to your guns. For the adventurous, answer the first question with an obvious lie and then stick with it for hours or days. If they try to move on from what you claim your surname is, insist that this is a case of mistaken identity and how can they possibly think you did it when they don't know who you even are. Make it a childish squabble over something inconsequential. Frustrate and annoy your interogators and remember that they only do this for a living, you're doing this to avoid Guantanimo Bay so your motivation is higher and you will eventually win. Or, at least when they kick the shit out of you you'll know you deserve it and won't feel so aggrieved.

But, it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.” I am asking If i know already that i dont have to say nothing then where is the point in the custody police to ask questions to establish a crime motive or even proof of guilt knowing they are up against no comment. It does not make sense.
I've thought that it could be a symptom of my introversion; verbal communication isn't really my thing. When I'm expecting a call, I'm prepared to talk to the person. I suppose the unexpected call causes anxiety because I'm not prepared, lol.
