I think I've only had elk jerky, TBH. Or it might have been buffalo. Or hamster; by the time something is properly marinated and reduced to jerky it's pretty hard to tell what the source was.
The most popular way, is to hunt it. Though there are a few restaurants around the country that serve it as well. I don't think I have ever seen it sold in stores though.
Shepherd's pie tonight. Actually, I'm making it with ground beef, so technically it's cottage pie. I call it shepherd's pie, though, because here in the Great Northwest, it's not cottage season and I don't want to be fined by the Department of Fish and Game and Cottages. Also, whoever heard of cottage pie? If I told my roomie I was making cottage pie, I'd have to explain it to him, and I'd get that sideways glance that says he hates it already and would rather have shepherd's pie. So, by calling it shepherd's pie, I avoid a whole bargeload of nastiness.
If I was your roomie I would throw my plate at the wall. I am 53 years old and when will you call me your flatmate, and I hate Shepherd's pie because it's so boring. When will you let me out of this room I need a runaround once a day? Language/culture issue, translation, I'm not eighteen and a half in our halls of residence, we shared a lifetime together, chief but still I require status re-assessment and re-definition in the English language now baby after our dissertations in '80.
Shepherd's (or cottage) pie is only boring if you make it boring. You can always vary the seasoning and other ingredients. There is no Shepher's Pie Police, clearly, as more people make shepherd's pie with beef than with lamb. So maybe use diced meat instead of ground, or make the crust with sliced potatoes under the mashed, or spice it up with Mexican spices or Indian curries.
Shepherd's Pie is supposed to be 'boring,' or simple, homely, harkening back to childhood or an uncluttered past, re-assurance on a plate after your hospital visit. 'Where's the ketchup, you shit?' And it can on occasion be the perfect meal solution, although not in my opinion with the addition of @Cogito's fruit loops and sprinkles/slices potatoes. However, a partner proffering Shepherd's pie when 'storm conditions' ARE NOT in the ascendancy, is suggesting of bankruptcy in the menu memory/chart of excitement that lies at the base of every great chef's eye: 'Shepherd's Pie?' 'Fuck you I'm going to Mcdonald's.' ... There's variations on the theme - see Jeffrey Archer & Krug champagne parties. ... The 'roomie' business I was dribbling on over/about is a US translishion issue, and it comes up fairly regular on the forum. We used to have a @USPoster writing 'My husband and I suffer due to our roomie's intrusion into our business,' when the rest of the world might answer 'Put him into a different room.' I think I get the nuance...difference... UK 'roomie' tends to be undergraduates, first years mainly, unless I've missed something vast in my eye...
Last night's dinner was pizza from a chain called Crust Bros. They do a good gluten free crust so my boyfriend is covered as well as myself. Tonight is probably going to be chicken thighs.
Hey, don't knock Froot Loops! They used to be very flavorful until a bunch of busybodies decided that children should never eat anything sweet! The way they are now, topping them with Shepherd's Pie would improve them, and the Shepherd's Pie would hardly change flavor at all!
Spaghettiritos! Left-over meat sauce from spaghetti over the weekend, put into a large soft taco/small burrito shell and rolled on a cast-iron individual steak pan, then topped with a bit of bottled pizza sauce, some sliced pepperoni, and shredded cheese and then tossed into the grill for a little while. Take that, rut! ETA: Pan like this, but no handle, it comes separate. Quite popular for gratins and such in izakayas.
Vegetable platter with two chicken samosa and rice. Naan too. Might just have a Lassi with it, should this sparkling water get boring.
I don't think there is an actual name for this dish (a bit of left-over baked potato sauteed with half an avocado which wouldn't ripen, a bit of red-onion, a few cherry tomatoes, and half a beetroot, with cheese on top and a poached egg...), but it covers the major food-groups of tasty, easy, fridge-cleansing, and cholesterol...
