    Need Help.

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by SazzyP260, Mar 7, 2020.

Hey, so I'm very new to this forum and I was really hoping that I could get some help. I'm trying to write something and I'm struggling with finding the word I need to use in the sentence. I don't really know how to explain it, other than I'm looking for a word that describes one word being used as another word.

Example would be: A baby (while one is actively pregnant with said baby) and calling the baby something else, like Bun/Muffin/Etc.

I hope this makes sense because I really do not know any other way to describe it but that.

Where are you from, and where is your story set? American and British English would have different words.

I'm from America and the story is set in a Post-Apocalyptic world, but still America.

An idiom? That refers to a word or words that mean something other than their inherent definition... like when a "muffin" means "baby." At least, I think so.

Or dysphemism if you’re dressing it down.

I agree with @Seven Crowns, but I suppose it could be technically classed as a metaphor.

Saying that someone has "a bun in the oven" is an idiom.

I've never read of anyone referring to a fetus as a "muffin" though.

I have heard a fetus described as a "parasite" on the television drama "House, M.D." and that is perhaps technically appropriate although it eliminates the emotion that a fetus evokes in a mother to be.

Play around with google for slang and idiom examples and look at urbandictionary.com for example.

If you could give us the sentence you're struggling with, that would be okay, and might get you the answers you need.

My daughter in law when pregnant with my grandson, called him "bean" because he was her little bean inside. Needless to say, when he was born, they called him Benedict, so it could be shortened to ... Bean!
