The saddest part of anything stupid is that they wouldn't keep doing it, if people weren't falling for it.

This - and those shopping pages where, if you don't click on anything for a while, a pop up appears in the middle of the screen saying:

"Having difficulty finding what you're looking for? Chat to us now!"

    No! I'm browsing! GO AWAY!

Although there's one hobby site I buy from that occasionally offers a small discount if you leave an item page open long enough. "Having trouble deciding? Order in the next ten minutes and get 5% off!"

So whenever there's anything I'm pretty sure I want to get, well, that's what multiple tabs are for, baby!

    My bank!

I know these are 'challenging times' but I've just been through a 10 bastard minute process (pressing this button, pressing that button, giving a recorded bot my details, giving them the third character in my security code, the seventh character, the twelfth character....) only to be told my call can't be taken due to the demanding situation at present.

Oh, right. You couldn't have told me that at the FUCKING START of my call then!!??

I'm fast learning that forums (and reddit/discord for that matter) which are supposedly there to help people (learn a craft, for example) are occupied by people who very quickly lose patience with anyone not at the top of their game, and basically send them away with a "Git gud..' In other words you can go there for help, so long as you're already an expert/master on the subject in question. Try asking a couple of 'dumb' questions and the immediate response is to try and discourage you and suggest you find another hobby.

Watch. Now that I've seen "Git gud" here, I'll soon be seeing it everywhere.

I'm showing my ignorance here but what's the connection between hearing an unfamiliar word several times after hearing it for the first time, and a German anti-fascism movement from the 1970s

Reminds me of years ago when I thought I might like to give an early online tank battle game a try, to find out that the second you logged in, some asshole destroyed your tank. Never did figure out how anyone got to the battle part.

What annoyed me about this but shouldn't was that I had to read all the way to the end to learn what the hell the recency effect had to do with the Baader-Meinhoff Gang, but apparently they don't know either:

"How the phenomenon came to be known as “Baader-Meinhof” is uncertain. It seems likely that some individual learned of the existence of the historic German urban guerrilla group which went by that name, and then heard the name again soon afterwards."

I have an uncle who was stationed in West Germany that had some kind of altercation with Baader-Meinhoff. Don't remember what it was... only that explosions were involved.

I know, very disappointing book for fellow urban guerillas. Good posters, bad book.

Shops that have a minimum spend for card payments. More often than not it's these little pound stores where you might only want one or two items.

The city of Jena (in Thuringia/Central-East Germany) mandating face masks for shopping.

Now, I'm not saying that face masks are not helping. They could be (likely), they could not (say, if a large percentage of people don't use them properly. Which is fairly common from my observation, but that is not science, just one data point.) The science I have read on that is still spotty.

    What annoys me is this:

    1) The latest numbers seem to indicate that the recent measures (keep the hell away from each other) are working. The curves are flattening. Without mandated masks.
    2) Thurinigia is a low incidence area. They do not have many infected people. Yet, maybe, but 1) helps them as well.
    3) Doctors and other professionals have enormous trouble getting enough masks.

With this in mind, I find quite annoying of politicians to mandate masks.

Ah, well. Maybe at least some science comes out of it, because now we get comparable number of masks vs. no masks with the rest of Germany as control group.

(Many people point to Asia, where masks are more common and seem too be helping. But it's not that simple. Most importantly, comparing Asia to Western Europe is not simply masks vs. no masks, as the public behavior is vastly different.)

(For instance, I have read a paper that pointed out that the most common infection path in Asia was via family members, while it was the work place in Europe and the USA. Because Asians keep their distance in public and at work, but get a lot closer at home, whereas Europeans and Americans always keep about the same amount of contact everywhere, but flunk on hygiene at the work place.)

At least in Japan, people do not keep their distance at all in public. I was on my way home from work last night and saw probably fifty people in line to buy next month's train pass with not more than six inches to a foot between them despite having a whole train station to spread out in.

At the convenient store the cashier, in handing my change back to me, couldn't just drop the coins into my palm, no, they had to make skin to skin contact with me in the process. Good thing I've got a small bottle of sanitizer to carry in my pocket now.

How can it be, I hear four completely different opinions about the very same single short story in one day?
What's with you, are you all related / connected? Can't you all agree?
Oh, and none of those opinions seems to have anything to do with mine :D

When you're speaking to someone who's taking your details, usually on the phone, and you give them a name which has more than one spelling and they ask, "How are you spelling that?"

Why is this question always asked in present tense? Why can't you just say, "Which spelling do you use for that?"

There are two common spellings each for my first and last so I spell them every single time. It takes all of five extra seconds. Either they're going to ask anyway, or they're going to get one wrong. I also ask almost everyone to spell their name, if I'm writing or typing it on something. Unless it's Bob Jones or something, you can never guess these days, and I suck at spelling anyway. Half the world has I's where there should be Y's and vice versa.

or get mad at you for asking how to spell it.
woman's name is "Lou Ann." I could not for the life of me find her in our system, so then I tried "Luanne" like Luanne Rice. NOPE! So I asked her how does she spell her name. She got so nasty with me saying "its spelled the normal way!".... which apparently was "Lew'Ann"
    ......WTF!?
and this isnt the first time stuff like this has happened. The people who giggle as you repeatedly spell their name wrong after like 15 mins of trying to get their dang name right INSTEAD OF SPELLING IT FOR ME are just as bad.
