Psychopaths and sociopaths don't experience fear. Of course it has certain other effects on their lives as well, for instance they can't really have normal relationships because they don't care about other people, they're just good at faking it when it suits their purposes. So I agree, someone who can't experience fear probably doesn't care what happens to other people, unless he relies on them for something important to him. But it wouldn't be out of love or attachment, rather a sort of rational valuation.

    Hi,

Actually sociopaths do feel fear. They are often said to have shallow emotional responses which basically means they really don't care about a lot of things outside of themselves. But assuming they can feel pain they would have a fairly typical emotional response to it - ie fear. As I said, the OP's character is really weird, at least to me.

    Cheers, Greg.

I am writing a novel that has torture. I think of what is the most nagging and ungrittable pain. I imagine snapped limbs, pulled nails, you can clench and grit your teeth. I remember pancreatitis hurt bad but I cannot get my character to force up the guys amalayze count.. So i used jaw pain, as that is, not the most pain, but the worst pain I had and impossible to ignore. The idea of blisters intrigues me. Something so tiny and inconsequential, so maybe using embarrasment, the though of being given blisters to make him talk and paradoxically the though of getting sepsis from infected skin, so even though the torture may have ended, he will die anyway. BE given freedom again only to have his own body rob it back from him?

I mean, he doesn't have fear, but he knows he'll probably need his fingers/eyes/skin in the future. The rational desicion would be to give the torturer what infromation he needs before those things are sand-papered away. At least weighing those scenarios against what happens if he spills the beans.

Fear is a fuzzy concept in any case. I'm not afraid to die, but I would go to great lengths to avoid it. That's a very strong aversion, and in my book it's at least on the same sliding scale as fear. I could even argue that it IS a kind of fear. Everyone has preferences and aversions like eating food instead of starving. Only a truly broken human would have no regard what so ever about what's done to him, and those people usually don't live very long.

Anyway, sand paper is, in my opinion, a criminally underused torturing utensil.
