Funny thing is when I looked like a long-haired hippy I was working for the cops at 9-1-1. May have told the story elsewhere here but I showed up at the station one night, hair down to my ass, leather jacket, ripped jeans boots etc asking to speak to one of my buddies. His partner was a new guy and assumed by the way that I stood and spoke that I was some sort of ultra-deep cover dude. They had to make me fake dispatch a call to get him to recognize my voice and know that that was what was on the other end of the radio.

I was just taught to remember that all the consonants were paired save the "M" at the start. Pretty similar to your "double ess" method.

The one that I can never get right on the first try is the Phillipines Phillippines Philippines! "Phillip" has a double "l", and Filipina/Filipino have single "p"s, WTF is going on with the proper name of the nation?

One time in... my early twenties home on leave maybe? I was dropping my best friend off at his house, near midnight. Stone cold sober both of us, so probably high school...

Anyway, just as I pulled into his driveway this came on the radio:

I looked at him, he looked at me, and we said in unison "Shit, got to."

I backed out of the drive, we took the forty-minute no-traffic drive into Chicago, drove the length of the road, and then I headed back in and finished dropping him off.

I've never heard that before but it's one of those songs one knows instantly within a few seconds that they're going to be playing for weeks to come. Not one to listen to if you have itchy feet and repressed wanderlust.

As I get older I get crankier because I don't understand the point of doing dumb stuff like this.

Ah, good old LSD! (Lake Shore Drive... what did you think I meant?)

I had pretty much the same experience, but it was on Halloween. My friend was dropping me off and just before we got to my driveway I found this on the radio:

I hope the sound is ok, I can't check it since my computer currently doesn't do sound. It's a whole album, Jeff Wayne's musical War of the Worlds, and it sounded completely different from anything we had heard (except for the big breakaway hit Forever Autumn, sung by Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, who does the narration for the entire thing*). You can find the whole album on YouTube, plus live versions of it, some with a pretty cool stage show. We drove for like half an hour before we had heard the whole thing, and within a week I had bought the cassette version and started wearing it out.

    * My bad, Justin Hayward is the sung voice of the narrator, while Richard Burton does his spoken thoughts and possibly dialogue? A little complicated, but there's no arguing with the lineup of talent.

I've got the 2-CD set on now, it's gonna be a good afternoon.

No, because the site they come from has a policy of never banning a member for any reason except doxxing another member. Anything else goes, which makes the place a cesspool of insults and flaming, so I'd rather not post the URL. I'll PM you the link.

ETA: I should have said that the link I sent is my source. The guy who maintains the thread on that site gets most of them, I think, from the Library of Congress.

Illinois fall high school sports are going to be delayed to spring.

Iowa's are still scheduled to take place as normal. Most Iowa schools don't have the enrollment numbers to be able to have both fall and spring sports take place at the same time.

I'd like to see a game between an Illinois team and an Iowa team. They'd show up on the field months apart!

Sideline reporter to Iowa quarterback: So, what's your strategy against the vaunted Illinois defense?
QB: We're gonna play 'em like they're not even here.
Reporter: How are you going to avoid the mighty Illinois pass rush?
QB: By being in Cancun on spring break by the time they rush me.

My feet burn most of the time. It’s very annoying not to mention uncomfortable, specially when you’re wearing Herman Munster’s hand-me-down boots for 8 hours of the day.

NPCs in video games always have one thing in common:

"Help me, I'm under attack even though I could easily escape if I'm quick and smarter!"
"Oh, you're to guide me through enemy territory? Let me make this needlessly difficult."
"I know you're busy doing the main plot, but can you do this trivial task that in no way benefits the main plot whatsoever?"

The Witch of the West (Elphaba) from Wizard of Oz.

Point #1 - Apparently at some point in 1976, she was going to appear on an episode of Sesame Street wherein she performs harmless jinxes and curses on the characters. However, the test audience were so scared of her (or distracted by her green skin) that they actually decided to never air the episode ever again. Apparently in 2019, there was plans to show this to an audience along with another unaired episode. Apparently it went rather well.

    More info here:

    https://lostmediaarchive.fandom.com/wiki/Sesame_Street_Episode_847_aka_The_Wicked_Witch_of_the_West_Episode_(1976)

Point #2 - I myself was scared of the Witch when I was younger. The scene where she zaps Dorothy's ruby slippers always freaked me out. Now, I know she was just trying to magically rip them off of Dorothy's feet but back then, I didn't know WTF she was doing.

Also, take a peek below. Apparently the same actress (Margaret Hamilton) but...damn. What the crap happened? She looks nothing like she does in the movie.

And apparently the actress even appeared on an episode of Mr. Rogers wherein she explained to the audience that she was actually a kind person, nothing like the woman she dresses up to be.

My first tax-filing job was at Taco Bell.

I would have brought you more nightmares than a mere shrubbery.

I was a horrible person then.

    Really.

I had several short dreams just before waking this morning - vivid as hell - and I can’t remember a single one of them.
